Job Title: Swim Team Head Coach Incumbent: Job Classification: D FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Points: Reports to: Job Grade: 3 Branch: Revision Date: June 2014
POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for the successful operation of the swim team program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Plans and directs the swim team program. Schedules and manages practices, meets, and related events. Complies with all YMCA and league rules and guidelines. 2. Distributes all swim league information to swimmers, parents and YMCA staff. 3. Maintains order and enforces all rules and regulations during practices and swim meets. 4. Provides direct supervision and evaluates swim coaches and program volunteers. 5. Compiles the statistical data necessary for various program reports. 6. Attends Swim Team Parents Council meetings. Provides information as requested. 7. Attends coaches meetings, swim meets and practices. 8. Serves as meet director for all home swim meets. 9. Carries out other tasks as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Must be at least 21 years old. 2. American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard certification 3. American Red Cross, American Heart Association or American Safety & Health Institution certification in: Professional Rescuer or Lifeguard CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen Administration. 4. Previous successful experience as a swim team coach. 5. Ability to supervise other coaches. 6. Excellent communication skills.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee will work in a normal indoor pool environment and may work outdoors with exposure to warm temperatures and the sun. This is a fast paced, active swimming environment that requires constant interaction and attention to the needs of the swim team.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is regularly required to: remain alert with no lapses in consciousness; sit for extended periods of time, including in an elevated chair; move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair; communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances, and communicate swiftly and effectively with emergency personnel over telephone and in person; hear noises and distress signals in an aquatic environment, including in water, understanding that significant background noise exists in an aquatic environment; observe all assigned sections of the water area; perform all needed rescues and survival skills; think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise and remember; operate alone as a lifeguard, without other lifeguards for support.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS: Successfully complete New Employee Orientation, Child Abuse Prevention, Bloodborne Pathogens training, and the Professional Lifeguard training before beginning work at the assigned location.
Attend all staff training sessions and meetings to maintain required certifications, practice skills and learn program standards.
END RESULT: 1. Safe, high quality, and successful swim team program with a growing enrollment. 2. Compliance with all requirements of YMCA Buffalo Niagara, the YMCA of the USA, and the NYS Health Department. 3. Maintenance of a safe, clean and attractive pool area and locker rooms.
