RE: 2013 Summer Universiade - Kazan, Russia.

As part of its role in facilitating opportunities for athletes to gain quality, international exposure, Australian University Sport (AUS) is currently developing the 2013 calendar. As a member of the International University Sport Federation (FISU), AUS is able to enter teams in the World University Summer Games or Summer Universiade. The 2013 Summer Universiade is being held in Kazan, Russia from 6-17 July, 2013. Compulsory sports include Athletics, Basketball, Diving, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics (Artistic, Rhythmic), Swimming, Tennis, Volleyball and Water Polo. The 2013 hosts have also elected to include Table Tennis, Judo, Badminton, Beach Volleyball, Belt Wrestling, Canoe Sprint, Chess, Field Hockey, Rowing, Rugby 7’s, Sambo, Sport Shooting, Synchronised Swimming, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Boxing.

AUS and via their funding of the program, the Australian Sports Commission, believe that the World University events have an important role to play in the development of Australian athletes and officials in the university and mainstream sporting sectors. To this end, AUS anticipates that by continuing to work closely with relevant stakeholders, an opportunity can be provided for high performance university student athletes that can greatly benefit their elite level development.

It is with the support and assistance of each of the relevant national sport organisations and other key stakeholders that AUS has enjoyed strong representation at past Summer Universiades. Australia’s performance at the 2009 and 2011 events have yielded our best ever results. In 2009 we achieved - 8 medals and 11 th on the medal tally and in 2011 – 16 Medals and 14th on the medal tally. AUS has continued to review and develop this program to improve results and hopes that with your continued support we can aim for a top 10 placing overall at the 2013 Summer Universiade.

In addition to continuing to provide mission staff, medical, operations and logistic support, one of AUS’ major high performance program initiatives has been to develop the World University Games Fund which we hope will take us one step closer to achieving our long term goal of ensuring participation for athletes in the Summer Universiade is at no cost.

To assist our planning, I would appreciate if you could respond at your earliest convenience, using the attached form to advise whether you would be supportive of an Australian team attending this event and what level of support you would be able to provide. I would be more than happy to discuss with you any areas of support that AUS can provide to further assist in facilitating this opportunity.

Using this information we will be in a position to further discuss the 2013 WUSG further with you and specifically the development of a Memorandum of Understanding. Hopefully with a better understanding of each organisation’s goals and the level of commitment that can be provided to the event, AUS can work to ensure that our performance at the Summer Universiade continues to improve.
