Unit Plan: Kowhaiwhai Panels

Cross-curriculum Unit: Visual Arts and Mathematics

LEVEL DURATION 3 4/5 weeks

Achievement Objectives Being Assessed Learning Outcomes

Visual Arts Students will be able to explain what some Maori Communicating and Interpreting in the Visual Arts symbols mean. Mathematics and Statistics: Geometry and We are learning to reflect, rotate and translate our Measurement (Level 3) Maori symbols in our kowhaiwhai panel. 1. Why do Marae have kowhaiwhai panels? 2. What is the significance of Maori symbols? 3. Are symbols used in all cultures - how, where, why?

LEARNING SEQUENCE

Teaching and Learning Experiences Ongoing Assessment Approaches

Introduction to Maori symbols and meanings. Discussion of symbols and their meanings. Share pictures of kowhaiwhai panels. Discussion of what they mean, why they have them.

Share current kowhaiwhai panels e.g. from Te Papa marae. Practise drawing symbols. Decide on one panel pattern - repeat this three times, incorporating some or all of reflection, rotation, translation.

Summative Assessment

Finished art work - kowhaiwhai panel. Brief explanation of symbols used and what they mean; and what Mathematical transformations are in the pattern.

ASSESSMENT Arts

Learning Outcomes

3. Students will demonstrate effective use of techniques shown using a variety of materials.

Criteria

Students will:

1. use no more than four colours 2. use colours that reflect our urban, modern society 3. use paint and/or crayon that is applied thickly and tidily so that the finished work looks smooth 4. repeat the pattern at least three times 5. have some translation, rotation or reflection in the panel 6. explain the meaning of symbols in their panel

Mathematics and Statistics: Geometry and Measurement

LEVEL 3 Transformation

Criteria:

Students will: 1. be able to explain what reflect, rotate and translate mean. 2. be able to demonstrate this in their kowhaiwhai panel.
