Hatturinn SEPTEMBER 2010

THE AKC AND US

Since becoming President, especially over the last two months, my weekly interaction with the AKC has increased at least ten fold. I am happy to report it has been very rewarding working with the folks at the AKC. Lots of things have occurred, and you have seen some of the results, the television introduction of the Icelandic Sheepdog on Fox and Friends, and the August issue of the AKC Gazette. In case you missed the Gazette article, it can be found on our website’s news page. Some things are still in progress and you will see the results later.

I recently attended the AKC Parent Club Conference in Raleigh/Durham, North Carolina. The discussions covered communication, breed standards, canine health and welfare, media, club finances, club operations, and many other related topics. More than 175 AKC parent clubs attended the event. It was a fantastic learning experience and many of the things learned can be applied to our club.

Your board members are taking advantage of what is available from the AKC to help make our club better. This includes finding out and using what has worked successfully for other AKC Parent Clubs, anything, from something as simple as a form, to how to deal with a difficult matter. As with most things of this nature, most don’t show up in the box score or very few folks become aware of them.

While myself and the other board members have been busy learning and working with the AKC, I hope you have been enjoying outings with your Icelandic Sheepdog. That is, after all, the most important part of our club; the fun part!
