Room 6 Homework week beginning 24th August 2009 Thank you to all those children who have given class presentations recently about simple machines and inventions. I have been really impressed with your posters and your ideas. Everyone has enjoyed learning from your work.

Spelling Group 1/ Everyone make sure you can spell these words correctly:- To, too, two, there, their, they’re, here, hear. Easy, I know, but which spelling when? To – I am going to the shop Too – I am too hot Two – I have two ears There – I am going over there (note this word has the word “here” hidden in it) Their – it is their ball They’re – they’re all in room 6 (contraction/ short for “they are”) Note – all versions of their/ there/ they’re start with “the” Here – I am over here. Hear – I hear with my ear.

Group 2 / everyone else, if you want to challenge yourself. Suffix “ful”, meaning “full of” Note these words end in “ful” Beautiful, wonderful, bountiful, restful, grateful, thankful, plentiful, colourful,  A suffix is a group of letters added to the end of a word and it changes the way the word is used in a sentence. These words, ending in “ful” are adjectives, so they are used to describe a noun. Now write the words in sentences. Extra points for using all the group 1 words in the same sentences as the group 2 words.

Maths – we are moving on to probability next week. You will have a good start on our work if you complete the “One Hundred Throws” sheet! Basic facts test coming soon! This week our speedy sums will all be subtraction and we will try to play snakes and ladders every day. How many times and in how many places can you practise your subtraction facts to 20? Maybe say them as you do tour tables. Eg 20-19=1, 20-18=2, etc, right down to 1-1=0. This week 50 questions in 3 minutes. You have been warned!

Concept – our concept work is now concerned with our own inventions. You could do some thinking, creating or testing at home. Our quest is to design and make something (which works by one or more simple machines), that will make your life easier. Eg an invention to pick things up off the floor. We will also be working on this in class. Please note, make sure your parent approves of anything that you attempt!

Basic facts We are now having speed tests for basic facts every day. Our goal is to have lots more people getting 100% in the next basic facts test. This week, back to addition and subtraction. Practise all your subtraction facts to 20. Speed tests this week will be 50 questions in 3 minutes. You have been warned! Keep going with those tables, too.

Concept Choose one invention that has developed greatly over the years – make a poster for the classroom showing how that item has developed. Extra points for thinking about the impact the invention has had on society or human life.

Room 6 Homework week beginning 17th August 2009

Everyone learns all the words this week! Spelling Rule of the Week:- Adding a suffix to a word ending in “y”. Change the “y” to an “i” before adding the suffix. happy, happiness, happily, happier, happiest silly, silliness, sillier, silliest funny, funnier, funniest  There are some exceptions to the rule. E.g. fly – flying

These spellings are not that difficult, but we will be using them a lot in our work this week. Lever, pulley, wheel, axle, inclined plane, screw, fulcrum, cylinder, wedge, force, pivot

Try to put these technology words into sentences!!

Maths – volume practice

Room 6 Homework week beginning 3rd August 2009

No, all those speeches didn’t work! So, here is this week’s homework. I have put the children into 2 spelling groups. They will know which group they are in. Group 1 will be going over some of the phonic rules, whereas group 2 will be applying rules and learning more challenging rules. However, each group is welcome to have a go at each other’s spelling.

Group 1 Long vowel words Strike, snake, prize, brake, these, alive, slice, whole, alone, amuse, cute, huge, flute

Group 2 (learn and find out what they mean) Preamble, precarious, precaution, precede, precipice, preconceive, predict, prefer, prejudice, prepare.

When you are confident, write them in sentences!!

Maths Great work on area last week. This week, have a look around your home. Note down all the different units of measurement that you find. Try to order them in size/ quantity from smallest to largest. Why are some units of measurement followed by a small 2 or a small 3? (as in 5m2 or 30ml3)

Basic facts Keep going with those tables – the tricky ones seem to be 6,7 and 8. Also learn their division facts – I have noticed a certain weakness in knowing eg the multiples of 36, etc. I have some new basic facts team games for us this week – you will have to be quick!

Concept We have really enjoyed having our Korean friends with us, what can you find out about Korea?
