There are ear foams that can be Rochelle Review Oxygen Tubing used by the staff to help cushion the tube on the ear that can help reduce the ulcers. Nurses on two floors Salmore have been taping the ear foams on the nasal cannula packages so the staff will use them on all necessary patients. Percentages of ulcers on these floors have decreased from 57% in February to 34% in August. Unfortunately aprox 2/3 of the ulcers are not documented by the physicians.

Would like a estimated price on what a pressure ulcer can cost the facility.

Options are to change the tubing to a softer silastic oxygen cannula or to change the ear foam that is used. Current oxygen tubing is $.19 where the suggested product, Westmed, is $.90 for 14ft. Current ear covers used, AirLife Ear Covers: $.42. (These usually only stay when taped on.) Suggested product, OxyEars: $.83

A study will be done that will involve the 4th, 11th and BBU floors. 11th floor is currently taping the covers to the tubing so they will stay with this process. 4th floor will be using the soft tubing BBU will use the improved OxyEars foam. This study will take place for 3mo.
