Purpose: This SNAP-Ed consultant position works with other Project, Unit, Section, Division and MDHHS staff, community partners, local coordinating agencies, private agencies and interested persons on the development and implementation of plans for SNAP-Ed statewide. This position will help develop contracts and provide guidance, consultation and technical assistance to schools and other local agencies in the design, development and implementation of SNAP-Ed projects and will ensure all projects adhere to SNAP-Ed guidance and requirements. This position is funded yearly by the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program (SNAP-Ed).

Duties and Responsibilities:

 Serve as the SNAP-Ed consultant and provide consultation on nutrition education and programming for schools statewide.

 Assist with developing Cardiovascular Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity (CVHNPA) Section goals related to SNAP-Ed.

 Serve on a team with other obesity, nutrition, food access, and physical activity consultants in the Physical Activity and Nutrition Unit in meeting related CVHNPA goals and objectives.

 Assist with planning, implementation and evaluation of MSU Extension’s programming designed to increase nutritional supports to residents of Genesee County affected by the Flint Water Crisis.

 Develop, sustain and strengthen partnerships with state organizations on implementing evidence-based programming and best practices related to SNAP-Ed/nutrition education.

 Share expertise and provide consultation on SNAP-Ed/nutrition education as it relates to preventing and reducing chronic disease.

 Assist in developing performance measures to evaluate physical activity, nutrition and healthy food access programming related to SNAP-Ed.

 Monitor contractual performance and provide technical assistance to schools to effectively implement SNAP-Ed programming.

 Complete and submit SNAP-Ed mid-year and year-end reports.

 Prepare state reports and correspondence related to SNAP-Ed as needed.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Master's Degree in Public Health or related field.

Experience: At least one year of professional experience in physical activity and nutrition programming is required. Knowledge of SNAP-Ed guidance and programming is preferred. Equivalent combinations of education and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities will be evaluated on an individual basis. Experience in writing reports.

Certifications, Licenses or Registration: Valid State of Michigan driver's license.

Important Skills and Characteristics: Ability to analyze and evaluate a variety of health and nutrition issues. Ability to communicate and work with others as a team effectively. Thorough knowledge of principles of SNAP-Ed, chronic disease prevention and health promotion, program planning, policy development and analysis, evaluation, community organization and resources.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: No significant physical activities are required in this position other than desk work, significant computer-related activity and some travel across the state.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS This position is a member of the MDHHS Division of Chronic Disease and Injury Control, Cardiovascular Health, Nutrition and Physical Activity Section, Physical Activity and Nutrition Unit and is responsible for assisting with projects as indicated.
