TutorAuthor – Authoring Tool

TutorAuthor is an authoring tool for customising TutorPro content and creating your own e-Learning lessons. TutorAuthor enables a trainer to generate their own web-based training, assessments and Just In Time search (by keyword) without any special programming knowledge. TutorAuthor will suit any organisation that wishes to develop interactive, high-quality web-based training for IT applications, professional skills and processes.

Course Development All a trainer needs is a good understanding of the target application or subject matter of the course that they wish to develop. A course complete with tests and exercises can then be developed using TutorAuthor’s powerful but easy to use tool-set. Trainers simply follow a four stage process: . Script development - Scripts can be developed in Word and imported into TutorAuthor or typed directly in. . Graphic development - After script development the required graphics are captured from the target application to match the script using the built in Capture Utility directly from the Author or any suitable graphics utility that the trainer is familiar with. . Interaction development - With the script and the graphics ready in TutorAuthor the trainer then simply adds the necessary interactions to simulate the target application. Such interactions are added using TutorAuthor’s point and click interface, no programming knowledge or expertise is required to produce a feature-rich simulation complete with button actions, mouse movements, function keys, drag and drop, text input etc. . Compilation and testing - The final task is to compile the completed project and then test in student mode, all from within the TutorAuthor environment.

Development of Tests Task Based assessments can be rapidly created based on the tutorials. The tasks can be assigned into Pre, Post and Pre and Post Test assessment strategies. The testing strategy is very flexible and can be varied for different groups of users. Different mastery levels can be set according to group or content. TutorAuthor allows a trainer to develop very sophisticated tests in a matter of hours.

Delivery of Course Content Courses developed with TutorAuthor are deployed across an organisation using TutorPublish administration and delivery shell, which runs and administers the courses. The separation of content from the delivery mechanism has several major advantages: . A central library of courses can be installed on a server and new courses can be added to the library and courses can also be removed from the library without having to make repeated installs to users systems. . Updates to courses caused by updates or changes to installed software and systems are carried out in one location greatly simplifying administration and network management. . Users can access the central library from any network terminal or remote PC.

The TutorVision management system provides control of the courseware library for both the individual user and the Administrator. Thus, if a user enters their name and password they will only see the courseware that their Administrator has selected for them. The Administrator’s functionality enables them to view student records, design from the courseware library for individual users or groups of users, set exercise options, etc, i.e. generally control and monitor the delivery of training and testing across the entire organisation if they wish to do so. Additional features provide the ability to: . Customise the courseware library to suit different user environments or business needs, i.e. Production, Sales, Marketing, Litigation, Secretaries, Lawyers, etc.

. Customise the courseware library down to individual user level with different users with different skill levels having access to individually customised curricula. . Administer pre tests to enable the automatic creation of user from the test results. . Track the student’s progress through the courseware using the Student Record keeping facility.

Delivery Platforms While TutorAuthor is designed to take advantage of Intranet/Internet environments, it is not dependent upon them. This enables the same product to work in a network client-server TCP/IP environment, via Intranet delivery or on standalone laptops or PC’s from which student progress data can be retrieved on dialling up to the server or Intranet. Lessons authored with TutorAuthor have a small footprint to facilitate easy distribution of the courseware across the Internet or an Intranet, if this is required.

Technical considerations These products require a platform consisting of a 400Mhz system or above with Windows 98/NT4/2000/XP/Vista or later operating systems and IE5.5 or later browser.
