*** Ottawa Branch 30th Anniversary ***

Welcome to the start of the 2001/2002 PPBSO Ottawa Branch indoor season. With this being the 30th anniversary, it will be a season of celebration. Keep tuned for a number of special events to be scheduled between now and May 2002.

We will again be running the popular amateur knock-out contest this season. The year will start with our traditional 4/4 March contest (four parts, one or two tunes) to determine the split for the “A” and “B” divisions, this year for both piping and drumming. Date… Saturday 06 October 2001. Time… 8:00 pm. To keep the evening from running too late, all competitors are asked to be registered by 7:45 pm. Place… the Walkey Road Armouries, 2100 Walkley Road, between St. Laurent Blvd and Conroy Ave (the Armouries are on the south side of Walkley Ave, right beside the Walkley Bowling Centre parking lot). *** NOTE: do not park in the reserved parking spots, the Armouries are a 24/7 facility ***.

Our piping judge for the October meeting is Amy Garson. At the time of this newsletter, the drumming judge was still to be determined. Amy was among the first female pipers invited to play at Oban in 1976 (prior to 1976, women were not allowed to play) and in 1981, she became the first female piper to win the Silver Medal at Inverness. Between 1982 and 1986 she continued to excel, picking up third, fourth and fifth place finishes in the Gold Medal contests at Oban and Inverness. In 1988 she was the overall champion at Fairhill and received the coveted invitation to play in the prestigious Grant's Championship. It was a lifetime of accomplishments at a very early age for one of our own Ottawa Branch members. So it is indeed an honour to have Amy open our 30th anniversary season.

At the 06 October 2001 meeting we will also be running that annual rite…. PPBSO Ottawa Branch executive elections.

If anyone in the Ottawa Branch has motions to be made at the PPBSO Annual General Meeting 03 November 2001, please make sure they are forwarded to anyone on the Ottawa Branch executive to ensure that they have time to be circulated and reviewed in time to be discussed at the 06 October 2001 meeting.

We look forward to another season of great turn-outs. See you there!!

NEW PIPE BANDS IN THE OTTAWA BRANCH AREA

Juvenile Pipe Band in Manotick

A new juvenile pipe band is being formed in Manotick, Ontario. This band will be for juveniles in the 8 to 25 year old bracket with a penchant for excellence and creativity in bagpiping/drumming and having fun together. This band will be on a three year building spree starting 04 September 2001. The band will be spearheaded by Pipe Major John Wright of Manotick who has the enthusiasm and experience to head such a venture. His pipeband from Thunder Bay was the first ever pipe band in the Rose Bowl parade and that same band of kids won 6 th place in Grade 4 at the Intercontinental Highland Games in Toronto. For more information, contact John Wright at (613) 692-2612 or email at [email protected].

City of Kingston Juvenile Pipe Band

The Rob Roy Pipe Band was pleased in the fall of 2000 to announce the establishment of a new Juvenile Pipe Band. The band consists of pipers and drummers under the age of 18 and is known as the City of Kingston Juvenile Pipe Band. The band is under the direction of Pipe Major Jarrod Purvis and Drum Sergeant Scott Nicholson. They are assisted by Scott Bell and Chris Bell. Jarrod, Scott (Bell) and Chris are leaders of the Rob Roy Pipe Band which competes at a Grade II level. Scott Nicholson is presently a member of the 78th. Fraser Highlanders (Toronto) and is responsible for Rob Roy's instructional program. Practices are held in Kingston on Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. The band participates in parades, shows, and competitions at the Grade V level. Last year the band participated in their first competition in Winchester and were very pleased to finish first in Grade V. The band will encourage young students to further develop their talents with other players their own age. In addition, players may have the future opportunity of competing with Rob Roy's Grade II band. Anyone who is interested in joining either the City of Kingston Juvenile Pipe Band, or the Rob Roy Pipe Band, should contact Scott Bell at 613-542-7287 or email him at [email protected].

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Pipes & Drums (National Capital Region). Formed in the Spring of 2000, the Band now numbers 25 players. Wearing the newly-minted RCMP Tartan and the renowned ‘red serge’ tunic, the Band is comprised of regular members of the RCMP, employees and citizen volunteers. Be a part of this unique community policing initiative. The Band would like to hear from you if: you consider yourself a solid player; piper or drummer, you are available for practice on Wednesday evenings, and you can offer first allegiance to the RCMP Band. Contact: Inspector Graham Muir, Band Manager & Drum Major, phone - 613-993-4179, email - [email protected]. th 30 Anniversary September 2001

MAJOR SOLO RESULTS (outside PPBSO events)

Pipe Major Colin Clansey of the Air Command Pipes and Drums wins A Grade Strathspey/Reel at Oban 22 August 2001 (after winning his fourth World Championship with Simon Fraser University). Well done Colin!!

Its nice to see Amy Garson back on the competition circuit. At the Summerside Highland Gathering 2001 she placed 3rd in the Professional Strathspey/Reel and 3rd in the Professional Jig.

At the Livingstone Invitational 12 May 2001, Andrew Hayes of the Ottawa Police Services Pipe Band placed 2nd in the Piobaireachd, 3rd in the MSR/Hornpipe/Jig. At the 2001 Dan Reid Memorial (Cameron/Gillies Championship ) 19 May 2001 in San Francisco, 2nd in the MSR, 3rd in the Piobaireachd.

8 Wing Trenton Pipe Band - Successful 2001 Season in Ontario and Scotland

For the second year running, the 8 Wing Trenton Pipe Band competed in Grade 4B at the World Pipe Band Championship, held on 11 August 2001 in Glasgow, Scotland. The band built on last year's success by passing through the qualifying heat (against 19 other bands) into the final round where they finished in 7th place (out of 12 bands). Although they finished out of the prize list, the band was particularly satisfied with their performances, especially as they beat the eventual winners (the Aughintober PB) in overall band ranking in the qualifying heat. The drum corps, under Drum Instructor WO Steve Lanning, came first in the qualifier and second in the final.

At the Perth Highland Games (held at Scone Palace the day after the Worlds), 8 Wing placed 3rd in the Grade 4 contest, and challenged up in the Grade 3 contest but without gaining a prize. In addition to three other public appearances before the World Championship (including the honour of being the only pipe band in history to play in the chambers of the Scottish Parliament), band members enjoyed a few days of well earned rest and sightseeing before returning home.

Since the appointment of Pipe Major John-Hugh MacDonald, the band has enjoyed a renaissance, growing in numbers and profile. The band began competing in Grade 4 on the Ontario competition circuit in 1998, gaining some prizes in 2000 and placing 2nd, 1st and 2nd (plus best drum corps each time) in 2001 at the three Ontario Champion Supreme contests they attended. The experience in Scotland this past summer capped a very successful 2001 season. th 30 Anniversary September 2001
