Please note: This syllabus describes general course content, requirements and materials. However, all aspects of this description are subject to my revision in order to best tailor the course to the needs of students, calendar, and circumstance.

COURSE CATALOG DESCRIPTION: This introductory class exposes you to fundamental techniques involved in jewelry making and metal design. Emphasis is placed on fabrication processes with non-ferrous metals. Demonstrations will include sawing, filing, soldering, fabrication, cabochon stone setting and finishing techniques. Supply list will be provided at first class.
Topics Covered: Introduction to jewelry design, its history and techniques Studio practices in jewelry design and techniques Critical analyses of both technical and aesthetic choice in jewelry design Visual elements and design principles

SAFETY RULES FOR JEWELRY/METAL ARTS STUDIO Mandatory Safety Precautions
1. This is a shared communal studio. It requires common courtesy and respect for everyone. Any inappropriate behavior should be reported to the instructor or studio monitor. 2. Instructor, Lab Asst., or approved Monitor must be on duty for the studio to be open. Continuing Education students are only allowed to work in the studio on Saturdays. There is a fee to use the studio on those days, you will pay the attending monitor when you check in. 3. If you come to class or open studio under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you will be asked to leave. Machines and torches do not have brains so you will need to use yours. 4. Tools are not allowed out of the studio – NO BORROWING 5. Report damaged or broken equipment/tools to the Monitor or Lab Assistant. 6. Report your injury! 7. No headphones or Ipods are used in the studio. 8. Long hair must be tied back at all times while in the studio. 9. Face shields or goggles must be worn when operating power equipment such as dills, flex shafts, grinders, or when melting metals and using acids. 10. Respirator or face-mask must be worn when working with acids, resins, or polishing compounds. Many of these materials are toxic and carcinogenic. 11. Do not operate any power tool or torch that you do not know how to use. Ask for help first. When operating power tools, keep your attention on your work to avoid accidents. 12. Do not wear any loose clothing, ties, scarves, etc. when operating any power tool, soldering, or working with any chemicals. 13. Closed toe shoes ONLY in the studio. 14. Wear protective gloves and a plastic apron when handling acids. 15. Do not wear protective gloves when operating power tools, flex shaft, or the polisher. 16. Keep any flammable materials away from torches. When soldering, make certain that there are no flammable materials near the workstation, such as paper towels, notebooks, etc. 17. No children or pets are allowed in the studio. 18. No one is allowed in the studio alone. 19. No eating in the studio. Make sure to wash your hands! 20. Wear ear protection when necessary. 21. If you smell something weird, like gas, say something. Open the doors if ventilation is needed. 22. Always Clean up Your Mess in the Studio- The last 15 minutes of class will be dedicated to cleaning up your desk, the soldering area, sinks, etc. and putting away all tools. Participation in clean up is mandatory for all students. Please be considerate of others, leave the studio as you would like to see it next time.

BASIC SUPPLY LIST
Safety: 1. safety glasses (even if you wear glasses, you must wear safety glasses over them) 2. dust mask (if you plan on using the buffing machine) – N95 rated Supplies: *tool box or something to carry everything to class *tweezers (for solder) *paint brush (for flux) *pencil *fine tip sharpies – make sure to purchase several, you definitely need these! *sketchbook/paper to take notes, sketch ideas *old towel (saves trees/paper towels) *220, 320, 400, & 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper *paint mixing sticks (to make sanding sticks) *metal for projects (depends on your budget and projects – 20g copper & nu gold/brass is a good start) *drill bits for piercing metal *silver solder: hard, medium, and easy - can be purchased as wire or sheet *jewelry saw blades - #3/0 (buy a couple dozen) *paste flux (such as Handy Flux or Grifflux) *cabochon stones (can be purchased later in the quarter when you know how to use them) *fine silver bezel wire (I stress fine silver NOT sterling silver) for cabochon stones (should be purchased with stones for measurement) *copper or brass wire & tubing for rivets (make sure to buy drill bits that match exactly)
For the first day of class: Please have sawblades, metal (such as copper or nu gold/brass), sharpie, and sand paper as I will be demonstrating how to use these items. There aren’t any supplies for sale at the college.
