ALGEBRA 2 SYLLABUS Revised 1/9/2011

Instructor: Roni-Starr Keahey (E-mail: [email protected])

Textbook: Prentice Hall Mathematics – Algebra 2

Course Description: Algebra II is a course designed to extend students’ algebraic knowledge and skills. Students are encouraged to solve problems using a variety of methods that promote the development of improved communication skills and foster a deeper understanding of the subject matter. To help students appreciate the power of algebra, applications involving real-life situations are incorporated throughout the course. The use of appropriate technology is also encouraged. Algebra II does not meet the graduation requirements for the Advanced Diploma.

Prerequisites: Algebra I and Geometry

Materials: 3-ring binder (for notes and bellringer), textbook, folder with brads (for classwork/homework), 2 sharpened pencils with erasers (NO PENS!!), calculator. I prefer mechanical pencils if possible.

Grading Procedures: Tests/Quizzes 60% Daily 40% Total 100%

Conferences: Call the school (221-3351) for an appointment. Please leave your home number and work number so that I will be able to reach you. My planning block this year is 5th block so I will be available for conferences from 1:15-2:30.

Procedures: If an unexcused absence occurs, you will NOT be allowed to make up the work missed and you will receive a zero for it. If an excused absence occurs, then you will have 2 days to make up the work or make arrangements to make it up. It is YOUR responsibility to find out what the assignment was when you were out. You may either ask Ms. Keahey or another student. If it was a worksheet or something that was not in your book then Ms. Keahey will have a copy for you to pick up. You MUST show ALL your work to receive FULL credit! This applies to homework, bellringer and tests. Please keep up with your grades in front of your math notebook or in your planner. The top right corner of every assignment should include: Name Date Pg #/Section # with Assignment Block # (Example: 1st block) My policy for using a pen in my classroom is as follows: 1st offense: you receive a deduction off your grade 2nd offense: you receive a zero on that assignment I am serious about not using a pen in my room, so always bring a pencil with you to my class.

Homework: Homework will be graded as follows: 1) Students will be required to show me their work at the end of each class period in order to receive credit for their work for the day. If they finish their work then they will not have homework. If they don’t finish it, then they will finish it at home that night. 2) Each student will also be given a study guide before every test. The student will receive it several days in advance so that he/she will have plenty of time to work on it. The study guide will be turned in on test day for a homework grade. The study guides are usually worth 40-80 points so please make sure that the study guides are complete. They are not checked for correctness but for completeness. 3) Turn in the folder on test day for a big Daily grade. The chapter that is being tested on will be graded on that day.

CLASS RULES:

1. Bring your book, pencil, and homework folder to class every day. 2. Be in your seat ready to start (homework and book out) when the tardy bell rings. 3. Do NOT talk while I am teaching or talking. 4. NO FOOD OR DRINKS IN THE CLASSROOM! 5. My desk is my space. 6.
