Chemistry Chapter 3 Chemical Foundations: Elements, Atoms, and Ions

1 GPS: SC3 Students will use the modern atomic theory to explain the characteristics of 2 atoms. 0 a. Discriminate between the relative size, charge, and position of protons, 1 neutrons, and electrons in the atom. 2 c. Explain the relationship of the proton number to the element’s identity. 3 d. Explain the relationship of isotopes to the relative abundance of atoms of 4 a particular element.

Essential Questions: What are element symbols and names? What is atomic number? What is atomic mass? How do protons, neutrons, and electrons form an atom? What are isotopes? How do the elements fit in the periodic table? What is an ion? How do you write an electron configuration?

Vocabulary: Law of constant composition Electrons Alkali metals Electronegativity Dalton's atomic theory Nucleus Valence electrons Atomic radius Alkaline earth metals Atoms Proton Halogens Transition metals Compound Neutron Ionic radius Chemical formula Isotopes Noble gases core electrons Atomic number Periodic table Metals Mass number Groups Metalloids Diatomic molecules Ion Cation Ionic compounds Anion Ionization energy

Homework

All homework will be checked for completion on due date and must be stapled to the assignment sheet and turned in on test day. We will review all in class worksheets prior to the test. The final homework will be reviewed prior to the test but you may not be writing during the review of that sheet. Late work must be done with a makeup assignment and turned in with the packet.
