COMMON MOTOR REQUIREMENTS FOR PLUMBING EQUIPMENT
PART - GENERAL
SUMMARY
Section Includes: Types of work, normally recognized as electrical, but provided as mechanical, specified or partially specified in this Section, include but are not necessarily limited to the following:
Plumbing Contractor shall furnish and install all electric motors for equipment included in Contract unless specifically noted otherwise. It shall be the responsibility of each Contractor and supplier to check any notations made in Motor, Appliance, and Equipment Schedule on Drawings.
Unless specifically noted otherwise, all motor starters, control devices, and wiring of motors and controls will be by the Electrical Contractor. Any exception to the preceding will be described under that part of this Specification that is directly affected.
Plumbing Contractor shall verify the ratings and characteristics of all electrical equipment that they furnish to ensure that the equipment will be compatible with the services provided and equipment furnished by other contractors. Refer to Motor and Equipment Schedules on the Electrical Drawings.
Any electrical wiring, which is included in the mechanical work, shall comply with the standards set forth in the Specifications for Electrical Work (Section 26).
If the Contractor has any doubt as to whether any item of electrical equipment or wiring is to be included in this Contract, Contractor shall either assume that it is to be included or obtain clarification from the Engineer prior to bidding.

Refer to other Section 22 sections for specific individual mechanical equipment electrical requirements.
Refer to Section 26 sections for motor starters and controls not furnished integrally with mechanical equipment.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
Coordination with Electrical Work: Wherever possible, match elements of electrical provisions of mechanical work with similar elements of electrical work specified in Section 26 sections. Meet applicable requirements of Section 26 sections for electrical work of this Section that is not otherwise specified.
Standards: For electrical equipment and products, in accordance with applicable NEMA Standards, and refer to NEMA Standards for definitions of terminology herein. Meet requirements of National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) for workmanship and installation requirements.

MOTORS
General Requirements: The electric motors furnished with all equipment shall meet the requirements of this Specification. If a conflict exists between provisions of this Section and provisions of other sections detailing the driven equipment, the provisions of this Section shall govern.
Equipment requiring electric motors shall be equipped with motors in accordance with to the following, unless specifically noted otherwise.
Motors smaller than 1/2 horsepower shall be single phase, designed for operation at voltage scheduled. See Motor Schedule on Electrical Drawings. Motors 1/2 horsepower and larger shall be 3 phase, designed for operation at voltage scheduled. See Motor Schedule on Electrical Drawings. Motor furnished shall have the above design voltage inscribed on the nameplate. All motors less than 30 horsepower shall be designed, constructed, and tested in accordance with NEMA Standards MG1-1989 and MG2-1992.
Motor Characteristics:
Single phase motors shall be general purpose permanent split capacitor start, induction type, alternating current, open, drip-proof constant speed, continuous duty, shall have a temperature rise of 115 degrees C based on a 40-degree C ambient for Class F insulation in accordance with MG1-12.41, shall have a service factor in accordance with MG1-12.47, and shall be marked with a code letter. Fractional horsepower motors shall have NEMA frame size 42, 48, or 56.
Three phase motors, 1/2 horsepower and larger, shall be general purpose, squirrel cage induction type, alternating current, Design B, open, drip-proof, constant speed, continuous rated, shall have a temperature rise of 115 degrees C based on a 40-degree C ambient for Class F insulation in accordance with NEMA MG1-12.42, shall have a service factor of 1.15, and shall be marked with code letter. The efficiency shall be equal to or greater than the following values:

Motors installed unprotected, exposed to weather shall be totally enclosed for all motors, frame size 445 and smaller. Larger motors shall be NEMA weather protected Type lI-A, or shall be totally enclosed.
Motors shall be equipped with bearings designed for the service and temperature rise.

Motors of 30 horsepower size and larger shall have ball bearings. Ball bearing motors shall be equipped with a large grease reservoir. Grease reservoir shall have provision for adding of new grease and the removal of old.
Special characteristics, housing, mounting, and other components for motors are specified in the part of this Specification which describes the driven equipment.
Deviations from the requirements of this Specification may be allowed only when the motor is of special design to suit the driven equipment. Such deviations are, however, allowed only when stated specifically in the article of the Specification that defines the unit of equipment.
All electric motors shall be sized such that the driven equipment will operate to specifications without loading the motor in excess of the nameplate horsepower regardless of service factor. In the event the nameplate data is exceeded, the Contractor shall provide larger motor and all attendant starters, wiring, and other electrical components to bring motor into compliance.
Motors supplied with equipment furnished under Section 22 that are operated through a variable frequency drive shall be provided with factory mounted motor-shaft ground system and the motor shall be invertor duty type.
FABRICATION
General Requirements: Fabricate mechanical equipment for secure mounting of motors and other electrical items included in work. Provide either permanent alignment of motors with equipment, or adjustable mountings as applicable for belt drives, gear drives, special couplings and similar indirect coupling of equipment. Provide safe, secure, durable, and removable guards for motor drives, arranged for lubrication and similar running maintenance without removal of guards.
PART - EXECUTION
INSTALLATION
General Requirements: Install motors on motor mounting systems in accordance with motor manufacturer's instructions, securely anchored to resist torque, drive thrusts, and other external forces inherent in mechanical work. Secure sheaves and other drive units to motor shafts with keys and Allen set screws, except motors of 1/3 horsepower and less may be secured with Allen set screws on flat surface of shaft. Unless otherwise indicated, set motor shafts parallel with machine shafts.
Deliver starters and wiring devices which have not been factory installed on equipment unit to electrical installer for installation.
