Society and Citizenship Research and Policy Interns (2 positions)

Working hours – 0.5 FTE with the possibility of occasional extra hours (1 year fixed term contract) Hourly rate - £8.30/hr

Role and purpose:

The National Union of Students is a leading campaign organisation that seeks to build strong and active students' unions, and defends, extends and promotes the rights of students. We carry out work on a range of areas, with our Society and Citizenship zone leading work on those issues in the wider world that our students feel passionate about. This includes work on global justice, citizenship, and community, with such issues as the minimum wage, trade unionism, voting reform and voter participation, ethical investment and the human rights of students overseas featuring in recent years.

There will be two roles to support the VP Society and Citizenship in their campaign objectives and work with other NUS staff to deliver change. The Society and Citizenship campaign falls into two broad categories; 'global justice' and 'citizenship'.

NUS’ global justice work covers issues around international development, solidarity campaigns with workers’ movements across the world and supporting the work of other organisations working internationally. NUS’ citizenship work includes issues around voting, engagement in local communities, and volunteering.

These two positions will both be part of the Social Policy Unit based at NUS headquarters in London.

Main duties:

 Conducting research, policy and campaign work on global justice or citizenship issues  Help produce and deliver community organising and activism training  Co-ordinating events related to these areas  Liaising with external organisations on campaign objectives  Administering campaign materials and distributing them to students' unions as required  Updating campaign information on NUS websites  Collating and distributing campaign newsletters  Maintaining contact databases for the campaign  General support for the VP Society and Citizenship  General admin duties for the campaign

Knowledge and skills required:

 A passion for global justice or citizenship issues  Experience conducting research  Experience in campaigning  Enthusiasm and a willingness to learn  Good working knowledge of all standard office software, especially Outlook, Word and Excel  Excellent organisation and time management skills  Ability to work on own initiative and managing your own workload  Attention to detail  Excellent written English  Excellent communications skills  Understanding of and commitment to equality and diversity
