MELLON POST-DOC FELLOW, CDLA The Center for Digital Liberal Arts at Occidental College offers a one-year Postdoctoral Fellowship focused on digital scholarship. Thanks to the continued generosity of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Occidental’s CDLA will hire one Fellow for a term beginning in the 2016- 2017 academic year. The Fellow will join a dynamic, collaborative team of professionals and postdocs. Duties will include: teaching and/or team-teaching students; advising and collaborating with CDLA Faculty Fellows on digital scholarship research projects; advising and mentoring students and student workers; and otherwise contributing to the efforts of the CDLA team to explore new modes of scholarly work and integrate digital methods and materials into the College’s liberal arts curriculum. The fellowship is intended to help prepare the candidate for a future career in academia, while simultaneously providing an opportunity to share specialized technical and scholarly expertise with the Occidental College community. To build upon existing knowledge and skills, the Fellow will be expected as well to continue personal development with disciplinary research work and professionalization. The CDLA will support this growth with limited travel funding and dedicated time for project work that corresponds with its mission and direction. For this position, the CDLA seeks an individual who thrives in an environment of constant learning and sharing of new concepts, methods and tools. Discipline specialization is open, but will orient to the humanities and social sciences. Scholars with interdisciplinary interests and experience are encouraged to apply. Candidates with experience and capacity for data visualization, multi- modal expression, media production, coding, and active participation in digital scholarship communities will be favored. Responsibilities: 1. Work with CDLA Faculty Fellows to help develop courses, labs, and digital scholarly projects. 2. Design and develop digital scholarship projects. Ideally, these projects would be a continuation of the candidate’s own scholarly work, adapted to integrate students and faculty at Occidental. Such projects might be developed collaboratively, and could focus on data visualization, mobile devices, geographic information systems, social media, data mining, interactive design, or simulation and gaming. 3. Help the College develop a vision of what digital scholarship and digital pedagogy looks like at a liberal arts institution by participating in campus-wide discussions about technology and pedagogy. 4. Develop and conduct training sessions, workshops, and/or a speaker series around topics of such as digital pedagogies , new modes of scholarly communication, and related developments in digital scholarship. 5. Help to expand Occidental's network of regional, national, global, and consortial ties. 6. Contribute to the exemplary use and further development of with Occidental’s Global Crossroads system, a unique digital platform for academic discourse 7. Help faculty and students take advantage of Occidental’s new Digital Production Studio and maker space Occidental's Center for Digital Liberal Arts The Center for Digital Liberal Arts enhances teaching, learning, research, and scholarly work at Occidental by helping faculty and students integrate these activities with emergent technologies and services. The CDLA’s Mellon Graduate Fellows partner with and assist faculty on research projects that incorporate advanced digital tools and methods, especially on projects that require specialized technical expertise beyond those regularly supported by the CDLA. The CDLA focuses on projects and practices that experiment with forms of public scholarship, model more open forms of scholarly communication, or take advantage of new learning spaces. Salary and Benefits: The Fellow will be considered a regular (12-month) employee of Occidental College with a salary of $55,000 plus the standard benefits and leave accrued by employees.
