School of Medicine Learning/Information Resources Staff

The learning resources specific to the School of Medicine are staffed by individuals with education and/or experience appropriate for their responsibilities.

Gross Anatomy Laboratory. The laboratory is under the direction of Arthur Dalley, Ph.D., Professor of Cell Biology. Dr. Dalley is a distinguished anatomist who is Associate Editor of the journal Clinical Anatomy, editor of numerous textbooks on anatomy, a recipient of national teaching awards, and an Honored Member of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.

Multipurpose Laboratory. The multipurpose laboratory is used for a number of courses in the degree programs in the School of Medicine. Direction in the use of the facility is provided by the faculty member responsible for the laboratory activity associated with the specific course. The following individuals with long experience are available to provide assistance:

Medical Technologist II Janice West (Part Time 20hr/wk) Education Level, BA in Medical Technology from UT/Martin Hire Date, 2/9/1970 Annual “Research/Clinical Laboratory” Safety Training (VUMC) Member of American Society of Clinical Pathologists Licensed by TN #ML-1377

Office for Teaching and Learning in Medicine (OTLM). The OTLM is directed by John Shatzer, Ph.D. Associate Professor of Medical Education and Administration. Dr. Shatzer has an M.S. degree in Educational Psychology from Indiana University and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt he served as Director of Medical Education service and the Clinical Education Center at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Shatzer is also the Director of Center for Experiential Learning and Assessment (CELA) within OTLM. Additional members of the OTLM are:

Matthew Weinger, M.D., Director of Program in Human Simulations within CELA. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and a master’s degree in biology (neuroscience) from Stanford University and an M.D. degree from the U. California, San Diego. He did his residency in anesthesiology at U. Calif- San Francisco, fellowship training in neuropharmacology at Scripps Research Institute, and training in management of perioperative services at Stanford Univeristy. Dr. Weinger is a Professor or Anesthesiology and a nationally recognized expert on the use of simulations in training for patient safety.

Lisa Rawn, M.A., Director, Standardized Patient Program (CELA). Assistant Professor of Medical Education and Administration. Ms Rawn received a Bachelor of Arts (Speech Communication) and a Master of Arts (Interpersonal and Organizational Communication) from the University of Arkansas. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt she served as Director of the Clinical Skills Teaching and Assessment Laboratory, National Capital Area Medical Simulation Center of the Uniformed Services University, Bethesda, MD.

Emil Petrusa, Ph.D., Director of Center for Outcomes Research. Professor of Medical Education and Administration. Dr. Petrusa has a M.S. degree in Psychology from Western Illinois University and a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Utah. Prior to his position at Vanderbilt, her served as Associate Dean for Curriculum Assessment at Duke University School of Medicine.

Donald E. Moore, Ph.D.. Professor of Medical Education and Administration. Dr. Moore has a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is Director of the Office of Continuing Medical Education and a nationally recognized leader in the field of continuing medical education.

James L. Bills, Ed.D., Assistant Professor, Medical Education and Administration. Dr. Bills has a M.Ed.in Curriculum Development and Instructional Leadership from Vanderbilt University and an Ed.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Tennessee State University.

Sally Santen, M.D., Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Education and Administration. Dr. Santen received her M.D. degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed her residency in Emergency Medicine in the George Washington/Georgetown University Combined Residency. She serves as course director for the clerkship in Emergency Medicine. She is also currently a candidate for a Ph.D. in the Peabody College of Vanderbilt University.

Eric Lin, Education Technology Specialist, OTLM. He received his B.S., M.S., Ph.D. degrees in Psychology from Vanderbilt University. He has the following certifications: MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer), A+ (Computer hardware) and Oracle and is also competent in PHP, HTML, JAVA and XML programming languages.
