Nithsdale Road Nursery School, 264 Nithsdale Road, Glasgow, G41 5LB TEL: 0141 427 1896 www.nithsdaleroad-nursery.glasgow.sch.uk

Welcome I would like to say welcome back to all of our children and families who attended last year and a warm welcome to our new children and families. I hope that you will enjoy your time here at Nithsdale Road and will always be made to feel welcome and a part of our nursery. As parents you are your child’s first educator and we should never underestimate the important job that you all do. Your opinion is very important to me and I believe that we cannot deliver the best service without your help. If there are any aspects of the service that you feel we could improve on or indeed there are aspects of our service that you particularly like, please let us know, [email protected]

Outdoor Clothing As we say goodbye to summer and the weather begins to change it is important that your child has suitable outdoor clothing. A waterproof jacket with hood and wellies can be left at nursery for your convenience. Having access to fresh air and exercise on a daily basis plays an important role in your child’s health and wellbeing.

Groups and Staff Our focus for the beginning of term is all about getting to know each other, learning about routines and developing relationships. The children have now all been grouped and have a named keyworker:

Red - Mrs Trainer/Mrs McMillan Blue - Mrs Ejaz/Mrs Gunn Green – Mrs Hobbs/Mrs Ali Yellow – Miss Wilson

Team Leaders are: Mrs Cumming – am, Miss Wilson - pm. Mrs Cumming is also responsible for pupil support and, along with myself, is responsible for children’s Wellbeing Assessment Plans. Mrs Moore is our EAL Teacher and is here every Monday and Tuesday. Both Mrs Ali and Mrs Ejaz are bilingual and are happy to work with any families who may require support with translation. (Urdu/Punjabi)

Child Protection: Whilst it is the responsibility of all for the welfare and safety of the children, as Head of Nursery, I am the named child protection coordinator and I am responsible for any child protection issues that may arise. You will have now been issued with an ‘All About Me’ sheet which should help us get to know a little bit more about your child. We would appreciate you taking the time to complete this.

Open Day You are invited to our Open Day on Friday 7 October. You will be able to spend some time in the nursery with your child looking at their folder and they will get a chance to show you around the nursery. We will finish off with the children performing some of their favourite songs.

As you may be aware, work is due to get underway with the building of the new Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in Bellahouston Park. Glasgow City Council’s Education Services has played a huge part in helping raise money for a young person’s bedroom at the hospice. As the hospice is right on our door step, we thought we would take part in this years’ Fantastic Fundraising Friday. At our open day we are asking the children to donate £1 towards this great cause. We will be singing some silly songs on the day. The times are as follows: AM : 10.30am till 11.30am PM : 1.45pm till 2.45pm

The Brick by Brick Appeal: If you wish to donate further to the new hospice there is an opportunity to buy a brick to help build Glasgow’s Hospice. Text BRICK to 70660 to donate £5, log on to www.ppwh.org.uk/donate

Promoting Positive Behaviour All staff have high expectations on how children behave at nursery and this is supported by the use of Golden Rules and our PATHS Programme. You will soon receive a copy of our Golden Rules. Please talk to your child about the rules and how they apply both at home and in nursery:

 We are gentle.  We are kind and helpful.  We listen.  We are honest.  We work hard.  We look after everything.

Our Golden Rules are displayed around the nursery. We will be holding a PATHS workshop for parents after the October break so please look out for this. We will give you more information nearer the time.

Improvement Planning There are three main areas of focus for our Improvement Plan:  Self-Evaluation for Self Improvement: New processes are understood by staff and it is acknowledged that self- evaluation is an integral part of our approach to continuous improvement. High quality learning through play is the central focus of our improvement planning.  Literacy and Numeracy (Pedagogy and Play) Children are provided with rich, relevant experiences to enhance their literacy and numeracy skills. Children are able to talk about and describe their learning. Our curriculum is stimulating and engaging and offers children challenge and enjoyment.  Family Learning (Engaging families in learning). Parents are supported regularly and meaningfully engage in their children’s learning at home and in nursery. There is a strong ethos of the value that parents can contribute to their children’s learning. A full copy of the Improvement Plan can be found on our website and there is a copy in the cloakroom area. www.nithsdaleroad-nursery.glasgow.sch.uk

Holidays September holiday : Friday 23rd and Monday 26th September. (A copy of school holidays is enclosed)

Yours sincerely,
