Lesson Overview: Students will use advanced word processing functions to create the following: mailings, product multi-page documents that incorporate the use of tables, templates, macros, style sheets, brochures, newsletters.
Objectives: To demonstrate the mastery of advanced word processing functions by producing a variety of documents that encompass advanced skills.
Approximate Time Required to Complete the Lesson: Two weeks if students already possess advanced word processing skills.
Tools Needed: Computer, software with word processing and layout capabilities and mail merge features.
Tasks/Activities:
Research: There are numerous word processing programs available for use. Use the Internet to search for several word processing software programs. List the features of each program in a table format. The table below serves as an example of the setup.

Check off features that belong to the various programs you research. Expand your research to include more features and several word processing programs. Save and print.
Mail Merge (1)-Create an attractive certificate for an awards presentation that will include this information: Name of sponsoring organization, type of acknowledgement, name of recipient, type of service performed, date, signature line(s) for supervisor, and any other appropriate information. (2)-Then create a data table for the recipients of this award. Include at least 10 names. (3)-Prepare a mail merge of these documents. Print to screen for teacher’s evaluation.
Multi-Page Documents (1) Prepare a summary of an article (magazine, newspaper, journal, etc.) that pertains to the advantages and disadvantages of entrepreneurship. Prepare this summary in an acceptable report format applying the rules of grammar, punctuation, etc. (2) Include a table that displays the advantages and disadvantages. (3) Create a template for a personal business letter. The template will contain a letterhead with your name, mailing address, email, phone number, code for current date. (4) Use the modified block letter format to compose and write a two page letter to two friends persuading them of the advantages or disadvantages (based upon your findings) of being an entrepreneur. (4) Create a macro for the complimentary close and writer’s name that can be used in future letters. Save and print.
Professional Documents:
(1) Create a bi-fold brochure on FBLA. This brochure will be used for recruiting purposes. Include the following: an attractive cover based on the current FBLA theme; a brief narrative section describing what FBLA is and inviting students to join the organization; the FBLA creed, pledge, goals, motto. Also, include a breakdown of the membership dues for your chapter as well as meeting dates and times, club sponsor and a list of your chapter’s activities. Make this brochure attractive and fill it with useful information. Be sure to include the FBLA logo, web address, your chapter’s web address, etc. Save and print on brochure paper.
(2) Create a tri-fold brochure on the FBLA competitive events. This brochure will be used to advertise the events and provide an explanation of each event for student participation. Save and print on tri-fold perforated brochure paper.
(3) Create a calendar for the upcoming calendar year. Choose a theme for your calendar that is inspiring to you. Include national and/or school holidays, birthdays, etc. Each month will have a photo that is related to the calendar’s theme. Also prepare an exciting cover with a photo or collage of photos and, of course, the calendar year. Save all work. Print all pages in color on card stock. This calendar can be laminated if you desire. Be sure to bind it so that it is useable.
(4) Imagine your picture on the cover of a popular magazine five years from now. Create this magazine cover based upon you. Use a scanned photo of yourself or have someone take a good picture of you with a digital camera. Use PhotoShop to touch up the photo, if necessary. Insert your photo into your word processor or you may use PhotoShop for this entire activity. Use the text tool to create the title of the magazine and the words for the articles that will feature you. Save, print in color on card stock, and laminate.
Integration of Software Applications
(1) Prepare a word processing document that incorporates a spreadsheet, chart and a database report and artwork created by you in an application such as Illustrator or Photoshop. In the word processing portion of this document, provide an explanation of how you created the spreadsheet, chart, database report and your artwork. Save & print in color.
