BOARD OF EDUCATION

July 22, 2014

The Braxton County Board of Education met in a regular session at the Braxton County Board of Education office, Sutton

West Virginia on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 6 p.m. The following members were present:

Kathy Parker, President Dave Hoover, Vice President Van Carr - absent Mike Chapman Jimmy Huffman

The meeting was called to order by President Kathy Parker at 6:00 p.m.

Kathy Parker offered a non-denominational prayer.

Dave Hoover moved and Jimmy Huffman seconded to convene into e xecutive session under 6-9A-4 (2)(A) at 6:02 p.m. for legal and personnel matters. Vote: 4-0

Dave Hoover moved and Mike Chapman seconded to reconvene into regular session. Vote: 4-0

The board reconvened into regular session at 6:58 p.m. with no action taken.

Mike Chapman moved and Jimmy Huffman seconded to approve the consent agenda items (minutes of meeting on July 1, 2014, payment of bills, budget transfers and supplements, Permission to Attend School from Nicholas County to Braxton County. Vote:

Dave Hoover moved and Mike Chapman seconded to approve the following Employment/Reassignment – Professional:

1. Rose Copenhaver – School Counselor (Itinerant) Countywide/Home Base effective beginning of the 2014- 15 school year 2. Shyloh Pierson – LD/BD/MI with Autism/Gifted Teacher (Itinerant) BCMS effective August 4, 2014. 3. Sabrina Skidmore – Assistant Principal/CTE Director BCHS effective retroactive July 15, 2014

Vote: 4-0

Dave Hoover moved and Jimmy Huffman seconded to approve the following Employment/Reassignment - Service

1. Maranda Cook – Accountant II (half-time) BCHS effective July 23, 2014 2. George Dennison – Bus Operator (formerly Robert Stump’s run) effective beginning of the 2014-15 school year 3. Tammy Hinkle – Custodian (7 a.m. to 3 p.m. shift) BCMS – effective July 23, 2014 4. Chuck Smith – Bus Operator Summer Band Camp July 28 through August 2, 2014 5. Mary Dennison – Custodian (2 p.m. to 10 p.m. shift) BCHS effective upon board appointment.

Jimmy Huffman moved and Dave Hoover seconded the following

Resignations – Professional:

1. Donna Singleton – Business Teacher BCHS effective July 3, 2014 2. Betty Taylor – Grade 5 Flatwoods Elementary effective retroactive July 15, 2014)

Vote: 3-1 Mike Chapman moved and Dave Hoover seconded the following

Mutual Consent Agreements:

1. Joyce Floyd from Interventionist/Instructional Coach (1/2) BOE (Itinerant) to full-time Academic Coach for the 2014-15 school year 2. J.D. Drake – Dean of Students BCHS effective August 4, 2014 – WVDE Policy 5000

Dave Hoover moved and Mike Chapman seconded to approve the following requests to have names added to the substitute teacher list effective the beginning of the 2014-15 school year:

1. Mark Piechowski 2. Betty Taylor 3. Judith Carson 4. Elaine Wine

Dave Hoover moved and Mike Chapman seconded the requests to have the following names added to substitute counselor list effective the beginning of the 2014-15 school year:

1. Edna Wilson 2. Patty Salisbury

Mike Chapman moved and Jimmy Huffman seconded to approve the following request to have name removed from substitute teacher list:

1. Valeri Garrant effective retroactive June 26, 2014

Vote: 4-0

Jimmy Huffman moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve fundraisers for Sutton Elementary.

Vote: 4-0 Mike Chapman moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve the

Third/final reading for the replacement of Policy 3605 – Return

Work Policy.

Vote: 4-0

Dave Hoover moved and Mike Chapman seconded to approve the

Elements of Literacy Course BCMS 7th and 8th Grades.

Vote: 4-0

Jimmy Huffman moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve the

Braxton County Head Start 2014-15 Grant Application.

Vote: 4-0

Jimmy Huffman moved and Mike Chapman seconded to approve the Dairy Bid from Broughton Dairy for the 2014-15 school year.

Vote: 4-0

Mike Chapman moved and Dave Hoover seconded to approve the

Bakery Bid from Heiner’s Bakery for 2014-15 school year.

Vote: 4-0

Jimmy Huffman moved and Dave Hoover approved the Memo of

Understanding with Community Care of WV for BCHS, BCMS, Davis and Frametown Elementary Schools.

Vote: 4-0

Dave Hoover moved and Jimmy Huffman seconded to appoint board members to the following county committees:

1. Dave Hoover – Transportation Committee, WVU Extension Agency 2. Mike Chapman – Holly Gray Board 3. Kathy Parker – RESA Council, Audit Committee 4. Van Carr – Juvenile Justice Board 5. Jimmy Huffman – Policy Council, Wellness Committee

Vote: 4-0

A lottery for possible balanced enrollment was drawn with reassignment to be determined at a later date.

Dave Hoover moved and Kathy Parker seconded to adjourn.

The meeting adjourned at 8:02 p.m. The next regular meeting of the Braxton County Board of Education will be on July

29, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. at the Braxton County Board of Education office, Sutton, WV.
