Re: Advisee Case Study #1: Johnny Utah

Re: advisee case study #1: Johnny Utah

Flash forward to early January ‘11……Johnny Utah is a freshman returning for his second semester. He had earned 13 credit-hours at NSU this fall ‘10. He comes in for advising in January, just two to three days before classes begin for the spring semester.

He was initially enrolled in general studies in August of ‘10, but changed his major to nursing in November. He is a first-generation student and scored a “22” composite on his ACT on his third attempt. This score made him eligible for the TOPS scholarship.

He earned the following fall ’10 grades:

3 – English 1010 “C” 3 – Math 1020 “D” 3 – History 2010 “B” 1 – Orientation “C” 3 – Communications 1010 “C”

He works between 20-25 hours a week at a local pizza joint and wants to enroll in 15 credit-hours for the spring semester.

Do you recommend that he enroll in 15 credits this spring ’11 while working that many hours? What courses would you recommend he should enroll in? Why? Re: advisee case study #2: Sandy B.

Sandy B. attended Freshman Connection in May, just one to two weeks after high school graduation. She earned an “A” grade in college algebra (NSU’s Math 1020) credit as a dually- enrolled student during her senior year at Natchitoches Central.

Sandy is officially ‘undeclared’ with her major, but is leaning toward a pre-med curriculum. She is appears to be very bright and had a 3.8 high school GPA w/ a 27 ACT composite, with a sub- score in English of 29.

What would be a good fall schedule for Sandy B.? Your task as her advisor is to list some potential class options and state your reason(s) for your selections. Re: advisee case study #3: Charles Whitmore

Charles was referred to the Advising Center in June ‘10 for advising for the fall semester ’10. He is a returning student who we hope is wiser this time around. He is 29 years old, works 30 hours a week, and has a wife and newborn child.

The last time he was enrolled at NSU was nine years ago, when he was 20 years old. Charles carries a 1.07 cumulative GPA at NSU and has 16 earned credit-hours.

His transcript is as follows:

Fall 2001 3 – Math 0920 “B” 3 – History 2010 “D” 3 – Fine Arts 1040 “D” 3 – Health Education 1090 “F” 1 – Orientation “F”

Spring 2002 1 – Academic Skills 1010 “D” 3 – Math 1020 “B” 3 – Science 1010 “F” 3 – English 1010 “F” 3 – Psychology 1010 “D”

Charles wants to enroll full-time at NSU this fall ’10. As Charles’ advisor, what questions might you address to Charles? How do you proceed with this high-risk and non-traditional student? Re: advisee case study #4: Clyde Clueless

Clyde Clueless came to see you for advising during early registration for spring ’11. You check screen 136 and see the following:

Sally is a transfer student from Tyler Junior College and just signed a scholarship to play tennis with NSU. She transferred in 36 credit-hours, mostly from their business division. She would like to change her major to Family and Consumer Sciences / Hospitality, Management, and Tourism..

Sally would like to know what classes will transfer to her new degree program. She is unsure what her transcript evaluation means as several classes have the number “1999” listed after the class (i.e. BUAD 1999, CIS 1999, etc.).

Sally is a decent student and graduated from high school with a 3.3 high school GPA and a 22 ACT composite. She appears nervous about transferring into NSU mid-year and realizes 12 credits each semester could mean five-plus years of college.

What courses will transfer to Sally’s new degree program? What would be a reasonable schedule for Sally Mae to take in the spring (she has tennis practice each afternoon for almost three hours and tournaments on the weekends)?

Tabitha is a returning student who lives in Grant parish. She currently has earned 40 hours towards her degree in elementary education and has recently been formally admitted to teacher candidacy. Tabitha’s grade point average is currently a 2.71 and she wishes to take a minimum of 15 hours this semester but wants to take classes only a couple of days a week or online since her commute is about 60-70 minutes each way.

The classes listed on her curriculum sheet include the following:

As Tabitha’s advisor, what questions might you ask? In planning this semester, how could also discussing the subsequent semester help Tabitha make a plan? How do you proceed to help this student complete her education degree? Re: advisee case study #8: Randy Readmit

Randy Readmit is a social work major who attended NSU for three semesters before withdrawing from his fourth semester for medical reasons. Below is a copy of his unofficial transcript :
