- Prospectus - PAINT THE TOWN 2017 September 2 - 4, 2017 Montgomery Art Association’s Labor Day Art Show At the Kensington Armory 3710 Mitchell Street, Kensington, MD 20895 The Montgomery Art Association invites artists to participate in our Annual Kensington Labor Day Show. Media eligible for exhibition are: Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Mixed media, Pastel, Encaustic, Drawing/ink mediums, and Sculptural 3D The show will be judged for prize awards in 6 categories as follows: Kensington (mandatory), Landscape, Still Life, Portrait (people and animals), Abstract and 3D Walt Bartman will be our judge for the show. He is the Founder and Director of the Yellow Barn and co- founder of the Griffin Art Center, Frederick, Maryland, and is an internationally collected landscape artist and renowned local instructor offering painting classes, and national/international workshops. Examples of his new work is at walterbartman.com . A Plein Air competition will be held on Saturday, Sept 2, from 9:00am to 3:00pm (see Plein Air Event page for details/registration). This part of the show is open to youths and adults to paint in the town of Kensington. Show Schedule: Registration Dates: Monday, July 3 - Friday, August 11 by midnight online – No exceptions. Show Hours: Saturday and Sunday, September 2 - 3, 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM Monday, September 4, 9:30 AM – 5:30 PM Awards Reception: Saturday, September 2 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. *All are invited to attend.

Art Delivery Dates: Thurs., August 31, 5:00 – 7:00 PM or Fri., September 1, 9:00 – 11:00 AM At the Kensington Armory (address above).

Artwork must be securely labelled on the Back Top Right identifying the Artist, Title, Medium, Price and Category. Judging will begin promptly at 11:00 AM on Friday. Late entries are not accepted for judging due to schedule.

Show Set-up: Thurs., August 31, 11:00 – 3:00 PM Show Hanging: Fri., Sept. 1, 1:00 – 5:00 PM Pick up Date for Unsold Art: Monday, Sept 4, 5:30- 7:30 PM or Tuesday, Sept. 5, 9:00 – 11:00 AM. Entry Requirements: • The main show is open to artists 18yrs. old and over, either new or renewing MAA members. • One work must be based on a subject within Kensington--the 20895 zip code. • Only original works of art will be accepted. No wet canvases accepted. • Each work must be securely framed and wired for hanging. No brackets, strings or saw-tooth hooks. • Works larger than 20” x 28” requiring glazing must be plexi-glass. • Work should be current and completed within the last two years. No work will be accepted that has been exhibited in any previously judged MAA Show. • The “hand of the artist” must be visible and dominant in the construction of the artwork even when digital tools are used. If a digital piece is not “one of a kind”, it must be numbered as a limited edition. • Photography is not accepted. • Tastefully done nudes are accepted (no explicit views). • Large work maximum is 38”wide and 42” height. For oversized work see show chair for questions. The judge and/or show committee reserves the right to reject inappropriate or improperly framed work. Artwork is hung on a first come first serve basis and on a space available basis. Works not meeting the guidelines will not be hung.

Registration, Payment, Dues, and Show Details

All registrations must be completed online at www.MontgomeryArt.org. (See Instructions at LD Show page.) No handwritten or late entries accepted. No images required.

REGISTRATION: Opens Monday, July 3 through August 11. Entries must be received by DEADLINE of midnight Friday, August 11th. No exceptions.  Entry Fees: MAA Members: $15. Includes the Kensington entry and one additional entry. Additional works are $6 each. Limit of 5 entries per artist. If not paying online, mail check to MAA c/o Elizabeth Stecher, 10812 Margate Rd, Silver Spring, MD 20901.  Membership Dues: $50 for 2017-18 for new and renewing members. $25 for student members. (Dues must be paid/renewed at the time of registration.) Membership is required to enter the show. By submitting an entry, registrants agree with the following: I am paying all fees and certify that I agree to the rules of the show as presented here. Entries submitted are my own work. I will not hold MAA or the Town of Kensington responsible for any loss or damage to my artwork while on the property.  Sales: MAA will process all sales, collect 6% Maryland sales tax, and take a 25% commission from each artist’s piece. Works that sell are not to be removed until the end of the show, Monday, September 4.

 Subject Categories: Kensington (one mandatory), Landscape, Portrait (People and Animals), Still Life, Abstract, and 3D. Artist must indicate the category on label for each piece including Kensington.

 Awards: 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention are given for each category. The first prize winner in the Kensington Category receives the Bertha Clum Grand Prize Award. The awards are cash prizes, gift certificates and other prizes made possible through the generous donations of merchants and businesses, and the Town of Kensington.

 Bin Work and Card Sales: MAA members exhibiting in the main show may exhibit their bin work and art cards. If you have more than five pieces, you must bring your own bin. MAA will provide a limited number of shared bins and card racks for members only. Bins must be the standard “black canvas” in presentable shape. No ragged, torn, broken/weak or discolored bins will be accepted. Bins will be arranged on the floor by the show staff. No framed pieces are allowed in the bins. Artwork in bins must be presented in plastic sleeves and matted where possible, and pre-labeled with the artist’s name, title, medium and price. Volunteer Task Signup: All artists entering this show must volunteer to assist with the operation of the show in some capacity such as greeters, cashiers, show hanging, soliciting donations, signs setup, and show set-up or take down and cleanup, etc. Go to https://VolunteerSignup.org/YXFCM. Review the list of tasks and click “sign up” next to the task selected. You may sign up before, during or after your registration but you MUST help in some way. Please contact the show chair for volunteer duties ahead if not able to help during the show.

Security: Reasonable care will be taken by MAA and its show volunteers. Neither volunteers, MAA, nor the Town of Kensington will be responsible for loss or damage to artwork on the property. Or go to the MAA Facebook page. - RULES - “PAINT THE TOWN 2017” Plein Air Event Saturday, Sept 2, 2017 (from Daybreak to 3:00 PM) The Plein Air Event competition is an open show within the main show with separate competitions for youths and adults. Artwork must be completed between daybreak and 3:00 PM, Saturday, September 2. Participation in the main show is not required. Artworks will be judged for awards beginning at 3:00 PM. Artwork will be on display and available for sale, if desired, through Monday.

Award winners will be recognized at the Saturday evening Awards Reception from 6:00 – 8:00 PM.

Registration Fee:

. $10 for non-members 18 and over. No charge to MAA members.

. Minors (under 18 years old) must have the written permission of their guardians and must be accompanied by an adult at all times. MAA is not responsible for the safety/security of Plein Air Event participants.

. Payment will be accepted in form of checks and cash only. Please note on the form if the artist will NOT be entering their painting for sale and/or in the competition.

. All artists must complete the full registration form with FULL contact information.

Competition Rules: All work must be completed between daybreak and returned by 3pm on Saturday for the judging and for sale. Judging will begin at 3pm sharp. One painting per artist may be entered for the competition. There will be a separate judging for children, youths, and adults.

All art MUST be of the Kensington area in the artist’s preferred medium and style. Artwork may be framed only “AFTER” the judging process is complete.

The Artist’s name, phone number and a price should be listed on the back of each artwork. Labels will be available during the take-in at the Armory.

All sold Plein Air artwork on display for sale will remain in the show with a red sales dot until 3:30 PM on Monday, September 4 when customer pickup begins.

Please be sure to have your canvas or paper stamped at the Armory prior to beginning to paint. Only artwork on stamped canvases, panel, or paper will be considered for the judging and prize awards on Saturday.
