WIRE RETAINER INSTRUCTIONS

Retainers are designed to maintain the teeth in their corrected position. It is important that retainers be worn according to instructions to maintain the proper alignment of the teeth. If you do not wear your retainers as instructed, your teeth will again become misaligned.

Wire retainers should be worn for 6-12 months full time, then at least 2 years sleep-time. We will instruct weaning off retainers at the final review appointment. With good care, retainers should last at least years.

Removable Wire Retainers: 1. Follow closely the instructions you have been given on how to take your retainers in and out of your mouth. Never remove the retainers by grabbing the front bow (wire). 2. Wear the retainers at all times except during meals, unless you have been specifically instructed otherwise. Remove the retainers while brushing and brush the retainers with your toothbrush. 3. Retainers can make it difficult to speak. Speech should return to normal within a few days. 4. Keep your retainers out of the reach of dogs and cats, as they like to eat retainers. Do not put your retainers in your pocket unless they are in the protective case. Do not leave your retainer on the table at a restaurant, as they tend to get thrown away! 5. Always bring your retainers to each appointment in case adjustments are necessary.

Cleaning: Brush your retainers regularly with your toothbrush and toothpaste. You can also buy Efferdent tables at the drug store to help remove heavy stains, deposits and odors. Never heat your retainers in boiling water or put them in the dishwasher to clean or sterilize them, otherwise, they will not fit afterwards.

*If at any time retainers become loose, fit poorly, cause soreness to the mouth, or if you notice teeth becoming “crooked”, contact our office as soon as possible. If you go for a period of time without wearing the retainers, they will not fit and you may need to purchase new retainers… constant wear is the key!

*Call our office immediately if, for any reason, you cannot wear the retainers. You have a Beautiful Smile which is an important asset…let’s protect it!
