"Jane Pinheiro Remixed: The Print Project—Reprints from Rare Mid-Century Wood Blocks in the Theodore Payne Art Collection"

March 15—June 22, 2013 Opening Reception: Saturday, March 16, 2:00-4:30 p.m. Free talk by Printmaker, Taylor Guerra at 3:00 p.m.

Theodore Payne Foundation for Wild Flowers and Native Plants (TPF) is proud to present the premier exhibition of bold, graphic prints of native wildflowers, Joshua trees and holiday themes pulled from wood blocks hand-carved by the California historical artist Jane Pinheiro.

"Jane Pinheiro Remixed" is a companion show to “When They Were Wild: Recapturing California's Wildflower Heritage," a collaborative exhibition of The Huntington Library, Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, and the Theodore Payne Foundation for Wildflowers and Native Plants. This historic show of wildflower art includes Pinheiro's watercolors from the TPF Art Collection and runs from March 9--June 10, 2013 at the Huntington Library.

Jane Pinheiro Print Project In the late 1950s and 1960s, Jane Pinheiro, an artist known for delicate watercolors of wildflowers, carved more than 30 wood and linoleum blocks. Discovered in the Foundation archives by the TPF Arts Council in early 2012, a selection of these blocks and several prints made by the artist were exhibited in the Theodore Payne Gallery last summer.

Encouraged by the enthusiastic response to this heretofore unknown body of work by "The Poppy Lady," the Arts Council has embarked on the Jane Pinheiro Print Project: limited edition reprints from these classic hand-carved blocks.

Archival prints will be offered for sale to the public in the future and used to support the TPF Arts Program. Out of respect for the artist, only the highest quality ink and paper will be used, along with careful considered printing.

The Foundation has enlisted the expertise of the Cal State University Long Beach print department that pulled one archival Master Proof from each block for evaluation purposes. A small number of these proofs are on view during the show to illustrate the range of Pinheiro's subject matter. The remaining Master Proofs will be released at a later date.

Jane Pinheiro Biography Born in Colorado on September 29, 1907, Jane Pinheiro moved to Southern California in the early 1940s and settled in the Antelope Valley, where she was instrumental in establishing the California Poppy Preserve. Her love of the area inspired her to record hundreds of desert wildflowers in the valley. She passed away in Lancaster on October 14, 1978.
