UNIFORMED DRESS REQUIREMENTS

Students attending Lindley Middle School are expected to dress in a manner that supports a positive learning environment that is free of distractions and disruptions. Beginning this year, students will be required to follow a school-wide uniform dress code in an effort to create an educational environment free from the distractions, dangers, and disagreements that result when student clothing choices are left unrestricted.

There is a direct correlation between student dress and student confidence, achievement, and behavior. With the new uniform dress requirements, students are better able to model appropriate dress that reflect a positive appearance about their character as well as pride by contributing to our school community.

During planning for the upcoming school year, parents/guardians overwhelmingly supported a school-wide dress requirement in order to (1) bridge socioeconomic gaps between families within the school, (2) increase school unity and pride, (3) reduce discipline problems, and (4) produce a cost savings for families.

With the help of a parent/guardian focus group, the administrative team developed the uniform dress requirements. All dress items include common adolescent and readily available clothing that can be found in area stores. While the uniformed dress requirements are readily available at any clothing store, we have contacted five local vendors that are aware of our attire: K-Mart (Veterans Memorial), Wal-Mart, Target, Old Navy, and Kohl’s (all on East-West Conn.).

The school administration is charged with the enforcement of the student uniform dress requirement. The administration is given wide latitude of discretion in determining proper or improper dress. Students who are found to be in violation of the uniformed dress requirement are subject to disciplinary action including:

• counseling the student • warning the student • calling parents to bring a change of clothes • placing the student in in-school suspension for the remainder of the day • suspending the student short term • recommending long-term suspension (for flagrant or repeated violations)

Clothing items should not include visible brand names, pictures, designs, or writing. Students may wear items such as jewelry and other appropriate expressive accessories (pins, wristbands, ribbons, etc.), as long as these items are not a disruption to the educational environment. Any questions about the appropriateness of an item should be discussed in advance with a school administrator. Students will be allowed to wear specific clothing for religious reasons, but parents should discuss this in advance with school administration. The uniform dress requirements will be reviewed and modified if necessary by the school administrative team. The school may also announce optional spirit or themed clothing days throughout the year. 2012-2013 Lindley Middle School
