Explain to the young people that in this session they will be looking at how to get everything ready to go and begin marketing and publicising their product/service in order to build a customer base. What is Marketing? Computer with internet access Explain to the young people that marketing essentially means spreading the word about your enterprise so that people know about it. You could have the best project in the world, but if no one knows about it, you won’t make any money!

Can the young people think of any aspects of marketing that companies use? Use a brand like Coca-Cola or Apple as an example – how do they make sure people know about them? Some answers might be: names, logos, slogans, TV and online advertising, social media, print marketing like flyers and posters. Some companies, like Coca-Cola, also give out free samples – have they ever experienced this? It’s a form of marketing too.

Working in small groups, give the young people a bit of time (say 15 minutes) to create a collage of logos or slogans of some of the products/services they use all the time.

Have a discussion about how important these names, logos and slogans are. If Apple was just called ‘The Computer Company,’ they probably wouldn’t get as much business. Because they have a distinctive name and logo, we can recognise their products anywhere.

Divide the young people into three groups, each with responsibility for one of these areas. If possible, play to young people’s strengths, 2 (Aprilugust 20176) but if not, it’s good for them to try something new. Come back together as a group and make sure everyone is happy with the marketing plan.
