Program: District 41
Representative Ryan Aument provided an overview of the issues facing the legislature in this session. Among these were: how to meet the needs of educating the Commonwealth’s youth; what to do about taxing and leasing gas drilling: how to stop human trafficking: how to revitalize the local community; how to create more jobs; and have less governmental intervention.
Ryan received his degree from the Citadel and was once a Rotary Student of the Month. He is making a priority of getting to know the constituents of his District. He said that he is determined to serve the community as well as past representative, Katie True. Representative Aument sees the need for greater transparency in governmental activities and a need to stop the ‘brain drain’ of our best and brightest graduates to other states.
Program: Jed Morris was a star catcher on the 2000 and 2001 Nebraska University baseball team which went to the College World Series both years. He was drafted by the Oakland Athletics and was climbing through the minor leagues. 2006 found him at Midland, Texas where he was having one of his best years under manager Von Hayes. He appeared in 45 games, was batting .306 with six doubles and six home runs, when he started to lose strength and to bruise badly. Medical tests found Leukemia. The next few years, were a blur of medical tests and chemo therapy. He said that the support of the Oakland A’s, and his family and friends were crucial in his recovery. Jed should pass the five year survival test this summer. When Von Hayes became the manager of the Barnstormers two years ago, he called Jed and offered him a contract to play for the Barnstormers. Jed founded a non-profit organization known as You and Me on the Comeback Trail when he came to Lancaster. This organization has as its purpose to provide support for those fighting cancer. This support includes finding buddy survivors to mentor cancer victims, providing positive assistance during the treatment phase, such as obtaining free YMCA memberships to give the cancer victim access to dietary information and physical training during and after the treatments. The Barnstormers have been very supportive of the project, as has been the YMCA and Leisure Lanes. Jed has sponsored bowleramas at Leisure Lanes during the past two Januarys which have raised more than $15,000 to provide funds for matching grants with the YMCA.
Jed does not have a baseball contract for the coming season but feels that Camden Riversharks will call if the Barnstormers do not offer him a contract. His old skipper, Von Hayes, is managing the Camden team. Jed has a degree in Community Health from Nebraska and will soon be married to a local woman. He plans to settle in Lancaster and make his You and Me on the Comeback Trail project grow.
As an aside his organization could use sponsor for the Businesses That Care EXPO III.
