JOHN – Week 2 Study Guide: “The Miracle”

We learn from Chapter 1 in John that true light and life come only through faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ gives eternal life to all who receive Him and believe in His name. To know God, we must look at Jesus Christ.

DAY 1. Read John 2:1-11. 1.) Describe the problem that occurred at the wedding and the embarrassment that it would have caused the host.

2.) Think of the attitude of Mary, the Lord’s mother. Did her attitude change throughout the unfolding of the miracle?

3.) Give one or two lessons that you learn from Mary’s example in this passage.

4.) How might you apply one of these lessons in your life?

DAY 2. Read John 2:1-12.

1.) List at least 3 characteristics of Jesus that this miracle reveals:

3.) Explain the two results of this miracle in your own words. a. Jesus “revealed his glory” –

DAY 3. Read John 2:12-17.

1.) Where and with whom did Jesus go after the wedding at Cana?

2.) Why was Jesus going up to Jerusalem?

4.) Look at the references in your margin. What old Testament verse is quoted in John 2:17? How was this prophecy fulfilled in John 12:13-17?

DAY 4. Read John 2:18-22. 1.) Jesus spoke of His own body as God’s temple when He said, “Destroy this temple and in 3 days I will raise it again.” Explain in your own words what He meant by these words.

2.) If the priests, teachers of the law, and Pharisees had been honest, would they have needed anymore “signs” to confirm the Lord’s authority to cleanse the temple?

3.) How does their asking for a sign show their unbelief and rebellion against Him?

4.) Is there some place in your life where you are asking God for a sign to confirm His authority over your life? How might your request be a cover for unbelief against Him?

DAY 5. Read John 2:18—25. 1.) Look up each passage and write beside it some aspects of how a believer’s body is “the temple of God” indwelt by Him today. a. Luke 11:13- b. Romans 8:9- c. Ephesians 1:13-14- d. 1 John 4:11-13-

2.) What attributes or character traits of Jesus do you discern in John 2? Give verses.

3.) What caused Jesus not to “trust” Himself to the people of Jerusalem?
