IUSM Faculty Appointments and Titles

1. Tenured and tenure track faculty – Must be 1.0 FTE. Evaluated on teaching, research, and service activities for promotion and tenure. Must have excellence in one area and adequacy in the other two areas, except for the rare “balanced case” scenario. Example of title: Professor of Anesthesia

2. Clinical appointment contract and clinical track faculty – Must be 1.0 FTE. Evaluated on teaching and service activities for promotion and appointment contract. Excellence in one area and adequacy in second. Example of title: Associate Professor of Clinical Surgery

3. Scientist track faculty – Must be 1.0 FTE. Evaluated on excellence in research for promotion. Examples of titles: Assistant Scientist in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology Associate Research Professor of Cellular & Integrative Physiology

4. Lecturer appointment contract and lecturer track faculty – Must be 1.0 FTE, Evaluated primarily on excellence in teaching and the scholarship of teaching for promotion and appointment contract. Must be adequate in service. Example of title: Senior Lecturer in Anatomy & Cell Biology

5. Part-time faculty – Must be less than 1.0 FTE. Promotion requirements are outlined in School of Medicine guidelines. Evaluated primarily on teaching, but other contributions such as administration, committee service, research, etc. that reflect positively on the University will be considered. Admission of patients for medical care does not constitute a teaching commitment or count towards teaching time per se. Examples of titles: Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Part-Time) 1 Professor of Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology (Part-Time) Adjunct Assistant Research Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology

6. Affiliate faculty2

A. Faculty employed by an affiliated institution that is part of the IUSM-Indianapolis campus or Academic Health Center. If rank is not modified, promotion requirements are the same as for tenure track faculty. If department name is preceded by the word

Affiliate is used only for identification of these individuals in internal databases and is not part of their published title. This replaces the previous designation of GFT. “clinical”, promotion requirements are the same as for clinical track faculty. Additionally, if employed part-time at the affiliated institution, promotion requirements are those of part-time faculty as outlined in School of Medicine guidelines. Examples of titles: Associate Professor of Medicine (Full-Time Affiliate) Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry (Full-Time Affiliate) Assistant Professor of Clinical Dermatology (Part-Time Affiliate)

B. Faculty employed by an affiliated institution located in the catchment area of one of the IUSM Regional Campuses. Promotion requirements are outlined in the School of Medicine affiliate faculty guidelines. Evaluated primarily on teaching, but other contributions such as administration, committee service, research, etc. that reflect positively on the University will be considered. Examples of titles: Adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, IUSM-West Lafayette (Full-Time Affiliate) Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, IUSM-Muncie (Part- Time Affiliate)

7. Volunteer faculty - Faculty who generously volunteer their time and who are not employed by IU or by an affiliated institution. Promotion requirements are outlined in School of Medicine guidelines. Evaluated primarily on teaching, but other contributions such as administration, committee service, research, etc. that reflect positively on the University will be considered. Admission of patients for medical care does not constitute a teaching commitment or count towards teaching time per se. Examples of titles: Volunteer Clinical Professor of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Adjunct Assistant Professor of Cellular & Integrative Physiology

______Note: By administrative practice, faculty whose primary Indiana University appointment is anything other than School of Medicine faculty are categorized internally as “part-time associate” faculty. Examples: research associate who also holds a faculty title; academic specialist who also holds a faculty title; non-academic staff member who also holds a faculty title; faculty member whose primary faculty appointment is in another IU School and who also holds a secondary faculty appointment in the School of Medicine; etc.
