The purpose of this study was to research and develop the youth work of fire brigades. I have always been interested about different sides of fire brigade work and I wanted to advance it in Kalajoki, Oulainen and Ylivieska.

This study carried out as theme interviews in fall 2002. Subjects at the part-time fire brigade of Kalajoki were fire superior, one leader-to-be and one fireman who use to be a leader. At the voluntary fire brigade of Oulainen the subjects were both one leader and one fireman who helped the leader sometimes and youngsters in four groups. At the voluntary fire brigade of Ylivieska interview subjects were five leaders-to-be. So my methods were group interviews (Youngsters and the voluntary fire brigade of Ylivieska), pair interview (the voluntary fire brigade of Oulainen) or individual interviews (the part-time fire brigade of Kalajoki).

In this study the main differences between youngsters and leaders were in the marketing. The youngsters said that they came because of their friends or family members asked them to.
