JOB SPECIFICATION

1. PREAMBLE

The Audiology Department is part of the merged Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology Flinders Medical Centre/Flinders University. The audiology service at FMC is part of the Allied Health Division, and provides a range of routine and specialist audiology services which include: neonatal hearing screening and diagnostic assessment, adult cochlear implant evaluation and rehabilitation, adult and paediatric hearing assessment. In line with the strategic directions of FMC and the Allied Health Division audiology works towards integrated clinical care, teaching and research and continuous service improvement for quality of care and patient safety within the limited human resources available.

FMC Audiology services are provided separately to those of FUSA. However, opportunities for collaboration and cooperation are explored. Some limited supervision of FUSA students is undertaken with patients of FMC.

The Audiologist is accountable to the Director of Clinical Services (Speech Pathology and Audiology) for the provision of audiological services, which result in the assessment and management of patients being referred from within Flinders Medical Centre and outside the hospital. This is a part time position and predominantly involves adult and paediatric diagnostic assessment of both inpatients and outpatients. The audiologist will work closely with the ENT outpatient clinic. The Audiologist implements procedures, which result in the diagnosis and management of hearing and related disorders. The Audiologist is responsible for the interpretation of results and communication with referral sources to identify appropriate surgical, medical and rehabilitative intervention. Counselling for difficulties created by hearing -related disorders and recommendations of strategies are provided. The Audiologist is responsible for arranging referral to outside agencies for ongoing rehabilitation and management. The Audiologist participates in research, teaching and service improvement activities at FMC/FU and within the region. To contribute to the cost effectiveness of services at FMC the audiologist works with multi- disciplinary Allied Health and ward based teams wherever possible

4. SPECIAL CONDITIONS (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent overtime, etc)

 Job and Person Specifications are reviewed regularly as part of the ongoing Performance Development process.  May be required to work within other locations of the Southern Adelaide Health Service.  Some out of hours work may be required.  Support values consistent with the aims of the Region, including honesty, respect and integrity.  May be required to undertake a health assessment prior to commencement.  Appointment will be subject to a satisfactory Offender History Check.  Comply with the Principles of the Code of Fair Information Practice, adopted by the Department of Health, which regulate the collection, use, disclosure, storage and transfer of all personal patient/client information within the Department and throughout its funded service providers.

KEY OUTCOMES To provide a comprehensive, high quality, audiological service is provided to patients of FMC. To achieve this, the incumbent will;

. Work with operational competence and in close collaboration with other audiologists and health care profession teams, adopting new techniques where evidence indicates its use.

. Contribute to the planning, development and evaluation of audiological services. Promote improvement and enhancement of audiology services and operational processes through multi-disciplinary continuous quality improvement activities.

. Hearing and related disorders are diagnosed by performing baseline and diagnostic audiological procedures for inpatients and outpatients at FMC. Standard testing methods are modified for complex patients. Limited oto-neurological diagnostic testing including ABR may be provided. (ENG & Caloric testing not performed at FMC)

. FMC referred patients are managed by identifying, recommending and implementing strategies to deal with difficulties created by hearing and related disorders, including counselling.

. Optimise management of the hearing impaired patient by liaising with members of health care teams within the hospital and community. Maintain comprehensive professional reports in main unit record FMC and interpret audiology results and disseminate. Monitor discharged patients by liaising with external agencies and professionals.

. Assess aural performance and visual communication skills for patients referred to the Cochlear Implant Program, including promontory stimulation. Contribution is made to the pre and post surgical counselling of cochlear implant patients

. Contribute to effective patient self-management, by providing information, education, and planning of the management with consumer participation.

. Provide consultancy regarding audiological services in collaboration with the senior audiologist.

To manage the service to meet performance targets and the strategic directions of FMC and the division, the incumbent will;

. Contribute to the overall management of the department in accordance with hospital policy by observing administrative and clinical protocols, maintaining accurate statistics to the standard required by the hospital and division, attending staff planning sessions, and maintenance of clinical assessment and therapy materials.

. Contribute to the maintenance of quality service standards of the equipment in conjunction with BME and other audiologists, instructing in aspects of calibration where necessary.

. Represent audiology at Department and Allied Health Division meetings, and others as required. Ensure timely exchange of information with the senior audiologist.

. Work with the Allied Health Division, in ensuring the cost-effective management of the audiology service to meet all performance targets. Monitor and evaluate the service and make changes where indicated.

. Undertake performance review with the Principal Audiologist and /or Director Clinical Services.

. Ensure own professional development including attending conferences and workshops to maintain up to date knowledge and networks

. Market the role and successes of the audiological programs within FMC and the region.

Educational/Vocational Qualifications

Tertiary qualifications with a Post Graduate Qualification in Audiology or a recognised equivalent allowing eligibility for membership of, the Audiological Society of Australia.
