Psyc 313, Fall 2005 Dr. Gotthard Research Journal
During the course of the semester you will create a research journal. Selected chapters of Klawans (1988) will be on electronic reserve and hard-copy reserve in the library. For each of these chapters you will:
1. Read the chapter. 2. Apply information from the chapter to material discussed in class. 3. Find at least one primary source on the topic of the chapter. 4. Write up your thoughts and findings.
Each entry should:
1. Summarize the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment as described in the chapter. 2. Discuss the area of the brain/body involved and the functions of those areas. 3. Consider how the diagnosis and/or treatment might differ today (this book is almost 20 years old). 4. Present any other information related to the problem that has been learned since the book was published.
Each entry should be at least 2 pages long, double-spaced, 1" margins, and 12-point font. Journal entries will be printed out and turned in at the middle and end of the semester (see schedule for specific dates).
Important:
In selecting your primary sources, choose your resources carefully - the quality of your sources will be an important part of your grade on this project. Articles you find through PsycInfo or MedLine will probably be of high quality. When using Internet sources, be aware of the source of the information. For example, information you find on sites like www.nih.gov or www.med.harvard.edu will most likely be of high quality. However, articles you find on sites such as tripod.com or angelfire.com may not have any merit at all. Your research journal should include an APA style reference page that lists all sources used in your journal entries, and be sure to cite your sources according to APA guidelines (see APA Manual for further details, if needed).
