Jeff Haywood

Professor of Education and Technology / Vice Principal for Knowledge Management at Edinburgh University.

Professor Jeff Haywood leads current major initiatives in expanding online distance education, high performance computing services, research data management & storage services, the redesign of the University website, selection of the next generation VLE, development of technology-rich study spaces, and e-assessment.

Jeff also holds the position of Professor of Education & Technology in the University’s School of Education. His research interests are in the development of strategies for effective use of ICT in education at institutional, national and international levels, with a particular emphasis on understanding learner experiences. He has led, and been a partner in, numerous EU-, JISC-, SFC- and Research Council-funded projects in the field of technology in higher education and lifelong learning.

Jeff is a member of the UK Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) Board (www.jisc.ac.uk), its Transition Group and past Chair of the Coimbra Group Taskforce on E-learning (www.coimbra-group.be). He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Yaz El Hakim

In my new role as Academic Technologist for Instructure Global Ltd, my main responsibility is to ensure a pedagogic and technical fit between the intuitive, cloud-native Canvas VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) and the institutions and organisations, which are considering adopting Canvas (see more about the VLE itself at www.canvasvle.co.uk). I will be working significantly across the EMEA region (from the UK London office) and addi- tionally with the US Headquarters, in Utah, working on research and presentations/publica- tions, globally.

David Ball David is an Independent Consultant at David Ball Consulting where he is consultant, researcher and interim manager, specialising in aspects of higher education, particularly scholarly communication, e-books and e-journals, procurement, library and related systems, virtual learning environments. Current projects include research in the area of open access publishing for Public Library of Science (PLOS) and the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften. He was previously Head of Academic Development Services at Bournemouth University, University Librarian at Bournemouth University and an Information Manager at Glasgow Herald and Evening Times. He was educated at Starthclyde, Aberystwyth and Oxford Universities. Roger started in an interim role as Head of Projects in February 2014. He manages a wide portfolio of development and research initiatives – supporting the provision and use of digital content in UK research and education. Roger's previous experience includes product management roles in the Science and Technology Books division at Elsevier, at ProQuest Dialog, and at ProQuest. Having started his career in illustrated reference publishing, Roger has worked in digital information for some 20 years.

Lara Speicher

Lara is Publishing Manager at UCL and was previosuly Commissioning Editor at British Library Publishing where she commissioned a range of new books based on the Library’s collections, including previously unpublished novels and letters by authors such as Arthur Conan Doyle, Ted Hughes and Keith Waterhouse, illustrated non-fiction on subjects such as cartography, history and botanical illustration, reprints of crime novels from the 1860s to the 1930s, and exhibition books.

Andrew Barker Andrew Barker has been Head of Academic Liaison, Special Collections & Archives at the University of Liverpool since May 2013. His responsibilities include managing all aspects of academic liaison, including managing a team of Liaison Librarians and heading up the research support team. In addition he has the wonderful job of ensuring the preservation and exploitation of the University of Liverpool's superb special collections and archives. Prior to this role Andrew was Head of Library Academic Services at the University of East Anglia for five years. However his academic library career began in FE and he spent eight years at City College Norwich, where he was originally a Liaison Librarian before becoming Learning Resources Manager in 2004.

Alistair McNaught

Alistair taught Geography for 20 years gaining experience in both Secondary and FE sectors. This experience was later used as cross curricular elearning advisor in a beacon sixth form college before joining the Ferl team at Becta where he was involved in the creation and roll out of two national ILT development programmes as well as supporting events and activities for many Regional Support Centres. From Becta, he joined the Jisc TechDis service where he continues to work closely with Regional Support Centres as well as a wide range of other agencies and organisations supporting disabled learners.

Vanessa Gamet

Vanessa Gamet is the Ebook Sales Specialist for the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands and Denmark. She works in consultation with libraries ensuring they get the best value for money when it comes to ebooks. Before joining Proquest, Vanessa worked in libraries for over seven years and held ap- pointments at large research institutions, including King’s College London as the Law Librarian and BPP University as the Collection Development Librarian. Sarah is the Library Publishing Coalition’s program manager. LPC is a two-year initiative encompassing a new organization to support library publishing and scholarly communications activities in conjunction with more than 50 academic libraries. Lippincott received her MSLS from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BA in the College of Letters and French Studies from Wesleyan University. Before joining Educopia, she worked as a communications consultant for ARL, SPARC, and the open access journal eLife.

Andy Alferovs

Andrejs (Andy) Alferovs, President, Kortext. Andy has over 30 years' experience in the book industry. Having started his career at the British library he went on to work in sales for Holmes MacDougall Library Services and Harper Collins Publishing, before being appointed Director and General Manager of Faxon UK Ltd, the US journal subscription agency. In 1994 he moved to Business & Medical Book Centre (BMBC) joining the board in 1996. On BMBC acquiring Coutts, he spent 4 years based in North America, developing the sales infrastructure. With the acquisition by Ingram Andy took on the role of Vice President Vice President Sales for the international library division, based out of the UK. Andy joined Kortext in January of this year

John Akeroyd

After a career in higher education running support and information services, John has been established as a consultant and interim manager to public and not for profit organisations for over 5 years as well as being an Honorary Research Fellow at UCL. Recent contracts have involved implementing Web Content Management systems and social media; information policy compilation; management of IM programmes and projects; implementing digitisation systems; digital training programmes; information governance; information staff management and team building. He is currently a member of the CIBER Research group and working on a strategic review of the international ISSN center in Paris. His current interests are in discovery systems and discoverability. Finally he has a long standing interest in ebooks and has written and presented many papers on this theme since about 2000.

He is a graduate in Electronic Engineering, a post graduate in Information and Library Studies and an MPhil from City University in information seeking in online systems.
