UHWO Education Division Meeting Thursday, March 3, 2011
Meeting began: 9:00 a.m.
Present: Susan Matoba Adler, Rich Biffle, Mary Heller, Jeanne Iorio, Rick Jones, Paula Mathis, Julia Myers, Jonathan Schwartz, Kristen Urata Members Absent: None
I. Scribe a. The scribe for today’s meeting was Kristen.
II. Approval of Minutes From 02/03/11 Meeting a. Rich motioned to approve the minutes as written; Paula seconded. Passed.
III. EDEE Program Redesign- Susan a. The redesigned program requires six unrestricted electives, compared to 15 “restricted” electives in the current curriculum. Jonathan asked for clarification of an elective in the redesigned program. Susan stated that could be almost any course but it should be a course that was taken for credit. Also, it is recommended that the elective credits come from a content area such as math, science, and social science. The counselors in Student Services will be notified of this recommendation. b. On the revised curriculum template, Jonathan pointed out that EDEE 492 is listed as “WI.” However, it is a classification that will remain so until after students who completed EDEE 310 without the “WI” designation attached to it have finished the professional program. After that, “WI” will be removed from EDEE 492. c. Susan and Kristen are working on a document that lists guidelines that the counselors in Student Services should be aware of when they advise teacher candidates. Mary stated that information about Praxis Test 0014 should be included in the guidelines. As soon as the document has been approved by the faculty, a meeting with the counselors will be set up. d. Mary raised the issue of LCC AAT students being negatively impacted by the program redesign. Due to the articulation agreement between LCC and UHWO, one issue is that AAT students will not have had EDEE 201, a course that introduces students to the UHWO program of study. If that course is not waived for those students, LCC AAT students will spend one extra semester at UHWO. Julia suggested that those students could have a special orientation by the EDEE faculty to accommodate their lack of EDEE 201 content. The LCC AAT documents provided in the meeting/agenda packet should be reviewed for corrections/updates to reflect the changes in the UHWO EDEE program. The issue will be revisited during the next division meeting.
IV. Division Budget- Susan a. Susan is in the process of reviewing the budget for possible funding of conference registration fees. b. Rich reminded Susan of funding to cover mentor teacher stipends. c. Mary spoke to VCAA Mobley regarding the $1500 travel limit. She will attend a conference in New Orleans and airfare alone cost more than what is allotted. Jeanne said she booked with City Travel for $700 for the same conference as Mary’s and will send the e-mail to the faculty for future reference.
V. Handbook- Susan a. Paula has one version of the handbook online and Julia will find a previous version for everyone to review. The goal is to have a comprehensive, finalized handbook by the end of the semester.
VI. Book Orders for Fall 2011 Due March 16th- Susan a. Susan reminded the faculty of the Fall 2011 book order deadline and to use the template online.
VII. Job Description for Two Supervisor Positions- Susan a. There will be two positions in the division to fill: Supervisor of Student Teachers and Supervisor of Practicum. As she prepares for the position description announcements, Susan asked what the MQs should be. Susan will draft the descriptions and send out for the faculty for review. We hope to have the adjunct faculty lined up before summer.
VIII. TECC- Mary a. A “save the date” for April 30 (Saturday): TECC and DOE are co-sponsoring a Teacher Education Fair on from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Honolulu Country Club. It is a “come and go” event for teacher candidates graduating in the 2010-2011 academic year to meet individuals in the DOE who want to hire. The event does not replace the screening interview. Mary would like the faculty’s RSVP at the April division meeting who can attend. b. Rich reported that Dept. of Ed HR will be doing screening interviews with student teachers on April 14; therefore, office spaces will be needed from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. There will be four or five DOE HR representatives coming to campus that day. c. The National Council for Teacher Quality (NCTQ) is soliciting information from teacher education programs such as course syllabi and student handbooks. Mary was advised by a contact at UH-Manoa not to submit information to this organization as the information is used maliciously. All Hawaii Teacher Education programs will not be responding to the request for information.
IX. AACTE Conference 2011- Rich a. Rich attended the AACTE conference in San Diego last week (February 24- 26) and attended a presentation (powerpoint handout distributed during meeting) co-presented by Dr. Thillainatarajan Sivakumaran, Associate Dean at the University of Louisiana-Monroe and in charge of NCATE there. Rich noted that Dr. Sivakumaran is not an educator, but rather a statistician who will come to Hawaii for spring break. Therefore, Rich suggested inviting him to campus to discuss NCATE.
X. WASC- Paula a. Paula conducted an elementary education inventory to complete a portion of the CPR for WASC and provided a brief narrative to Mark Hanson (chair of WASC committee).
XI. Faculty Senate Report- Paula and Rich a. Paula announced several highlights from the senate meeting: i. UHWO Summer 2011 tuition is going down from its previous rate. ii. Google mail migration for students is complete. iii. West Oahu Day is April 6. iv. There were 100 applications received for the Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs position; the list has been narrowed to 3-5 finalized. v. Nominations for the Laulima awards are being accepted. The deadline is March 30 at 4:30 p.m. b. Rich added that the CU credit policy is on the website and that everything that the division submitted to curriculum committee was approved.
XII. Budget & Resource Committee March 7th Deadline- Susan a. Susan stated that approximately $9,000 was “discovered;” therefore, if any faculty member has any requests they need to submit applications by March 7th.
XIII. NCATE Progress- Mary a. The NCATE work meeting scheduled immediately after the division meeting would focus on Taskstream and rubrics. Mary added that Margie Crutchfield would hold a webinar on Thursday, March 10 regarding questions and answers for NCATE documents. 9:00 a.m.
XIV. Field Experience Update- Rich a. Rich reported that he has had to do “damage control” regarding placements: i. One teacher candidate wanted to be placed at the school where her daughter attends. When she was informed that was not acceptable, she tried to do her own placement without Rich’s knowledge. ii. A second teacher candidate needed to be placed at a different school because his original school placement was where his fiancée worked and where he ran an after school program. b. All faculty participated in a discussion and agreed that the students must abide by ethical standards regarding placements in schools. Rich will draft a policy regarding placements in schools which will be included in the handbook. XV. Other New Business a. None were raised due to time constraints.
XVI. Adjourn a. Meeting adjourned at 10:29 a.m.
