SOPHOMORE CLINIC II, SPRING 2002 Calculating Greenhouse Gas Emissions using the NJHEPS worksheet Due February 17, 2003

Each group will calculate the CO2 emissions for Rowan University using the NJHEPS format provided. Additionally, your group will research one of the qualitative questions at the end of the worksheet (7.1-7.6).

Your teams are assigned as follows:

Team 1: Phil Bowen, Jesse Dougherty, Steve Rugge, Jason Vopelius, Walter Walker(7.6 and 7.7) Team 2: Liz DiPaolo, Steve Partesi, Ryan Reali, Krystal Russell, Jason Worth (7.2) Team 3: Chris Boyton, Dana Kaminsky, Vicki Lenoci, Kiel MacCormick, Gina Rossi (7.1) Team 4: Joe Keenan, Josh McMillan, Frank Romanski, Kyle Skala, Karl Spiewak (7.4) Team 5: Lauren Connell, Josh Davis, Lara Derchak, Jamie Gooch, Larry Pologruto, Jacki Stewart (7.5) Team 6: Erin Frey, Diana Garcia, Brian LaCerra, Eric Skibbe, Angela Zimarowski (7.3)

Your groups should make a good effort to research data for these and other missing data at Rowan. A good place to start is Rowan’s web site, which may not give you the information you need, but will give you leads on which office(s) you should contact. When contacting individuals on campus, you should reference the Sustainability Covenant signed by President Farish and the New Jersey Silver Track Program.

The available data are located in public1/temp/hollar/utilities. The following files are available electronically:  The NJHEPS worksheet & instructions: NJHEPSworksheet and NJHEPSprotocol_instructions (these are also linked to the website)  Conectiv (Electricity) bills for 1995-2003  South Jersey Gas bills for 1995-2003 (these are incomplete and need to be labeled by year)  Oil bills for 1995-2003 (these also need to be labeled by year)  Water and Sewer for 1995-2003 (these also need to be labeled by year)

Note: Your team will modify the provided worksheet to include information for each year for the electric, gas, and oil bill. You may leave other information for interim years blank. Your report must include: 1. A letter of transmittal stating the purpose of the activity and summarizing your report. 2. The modified NJHEPS worksheet (up to questions 7.1-7.6), calculated for the following fiscal years: a. July 95 – June 96 b. July 96 – June 97 c. July 97 – Jun 98 d. July 99 – Jun 99 e. July 99 – Jun 00 f. July 00 – Jun 01 g. July 01 – Jun 02 3. A 1-2 page summary of your findings for your group’s assigned question. 4. Plots of the following: a. Electricity use (kWh) from 1995-1996 to 2001-2002 b. Gas use (therm) from 1995-1996 to 2001-2002 c. Oil consumption from 1995-1996 to 2001-2002 d. A representative plot (pick one or more years) of monthly electricity use e. A representative plot (pick one or more years) of monthly gas use 5. A summary of the method your group used to make any estimates for the worksheet numbers.

Missing information that your group will need to research includes the campus climate controlled area, campus population, gasoline, and other energy sources (e.g. CoGen plant). We have the proposal for the CoGen Plant installed in 1990, as well as performance reports and a proposal for a new CoGen plant. These will be available outside Dr. Hollar’s office and on reserve in the library.
