Conference Dear India Business Conference Patron: President Vikram Bhartia Welcome to the 10th Annual India Business Conference. In 1992, when we held our first conference, India was embarking on a new and exciting journey sparked by much needed economic liberalization and reforms. To celebrate the India Marketing and Business Conference’s 10th anniversary, we wanted to select a theme that Technology recognized India’s accomplishments and also highlighted the bright future India Committee has positioned itself for. Accordingly, the theme for this year’s conference is: Ami Fadia “India: A Billion Person Opportunity.” In the face of a global economic downturn, Vikram Talada India has remained one of the few bright spots in the world, continuing its rapid growth and ascent to join the ranks of the world’s great economic powerhouses. Harvey C. Fruehauf Professor of Business Administration

University of Michigan Business School

C.K. Prahalad specializes in corporate strategy and the role of top management in large, diversified, multinational corporations. Dr. Prahalad is the Harvey C. Fruehauf Professor of Business Administration at the University of Michigan. His recent co-authored article, "Co- opting Customer Competence," was applauded by The New York Times and InformationWeek. His 1990 essay on 'core competence' is the Harvard Business Review's most reprinted article ever.

Dr. Prahalad has consulted for the top management of numerous firms including AT&T, Cargill, Eastman Kodak, Honeywell, ICL, Philips, TRW, Quantum, NCR, and Oracle. He currently serves as Chairman of the Board at PRAJA inc., a company dedicated to shaping the way people experience events through a wide variety of converging media.

Executive Director

International Monetary Fund

Dr. Y.V. Reddy is the Executive Director for India, Bangladesh and Bhutan at the International Monetary Fund. Prior to his current role, he was Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India and was responsible for economic analysis and policy, monetary policy, development of financial markets and external sector management. Formerly, Dr. Reddy was Secretary, Ministry of Finance and Additional Secretary, Ministry of Commerce in the Government of India. He has been closely associated with several academic institutions in teaching and research capacities. Dr. Reddy has also authored several articles and published a number of books.

Mr. Vivek Paul

Wipro Technologies, Wipro Ltd.

Prior to Wipro, Mr. Paul was based in Milwaukee, WI, and ran GE's Global CT Scanner business. Mr. Paul has also been the President and CEO of GE's medical equipment joint venture with Wipro. Mr. Paul was part of the venture as a new start-up, to its becoming a global design and manufacturing base for ultrasound equipment, as well as a leader in the distribution and service of medical imaging equipment in the South Asian markets. Mr. Paul has also worked at Bain & Co., Boston, and at PepsiCo Inc., NY in their M&A area. Mr. Paul holds a master’s degree in Business Administration from University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He is a graduate in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from B.I.T.S., Pilani, India. Mr. Paul is a member of the Board of the California Chamber of Commerce, and vice-president of its Technology Committee. He is a member of the B.I.T.S Senate, on the advisory board of Stanford University’s Radiology Department and a charter member of The Silicon Valley Indus Entrepreneurs Organization.

Mr. Ajay G. Piramal, Chairman of Piramal Enterprises Limited (PEL), is a leading industrialist in India. PEL is one of India’s largest diversified business houses. The US $550 million conglomerate has interests in pharmaceuticals, retailing, textiles, glass containers, etc. Piramal Enterprises’ vision is to become the most admired company in the eyes of all its stakeholders – customers, shareholders, employees, and the society/environment. Mr. Piramal completed his B. Sc (Hons) with First Class Distinction from Bombay University. He also holds a Master in Management Studies from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies and completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Mr. S. Ramadorai

Tata Consultancy Services

During the past 30 years, Mr. S. Ramadorai has played an integral role in the international development of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). His efforts have helped make TCS one of the world's largest global software and services companies. Beginning his career with TCS as a junior engineer, he rose through the ranks and was, eventually, entrusted with the task of setting up TCS' operations in the United States in 1979 in New York City, which has since grown to over 40 offices throughout the country. Since taking on the role of CEO, Mr. Ramadorai has focused his efforts on building relationships with large corporations and academic institutions, planning and directing technology development and acquisitions and overseeing the company's research and development activities.

Mr. Ramadorai holds a bachelors degree in Physics from Delhi University, India, a bachelor of engineering degree in electronics and telecommunications from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, and a masters degree in computer science from the University of California - UCLA, USA. In 1993, Mr. Ramadorai took the senior executive development program at MIT's Sloan School of Management. Page 9 Investing Panel

Raghuram Rajan is currently the Joseph L. Gidwitz Professor of Finance at GSB-Chicago, where he has been a member of faculty since 1991. He was the Fischer Black Visiting Professor at MIT during 2000-01. He has also been a visiting Professor at Northwestern University during 1996-97, Bertil Daniellson visiting Professor of Banking and Finance, Stockholm School of Economics during 1996-97. He completed B.Tech. (electrical engineering) from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi in 1985. He went on the do an M.B.A. at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad in 1987. After that he earned a Ph.D. at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1991.

Mintoo Bhandari, Managing Director and Founder, The VIEW Group

Mr. Bhandari is the principal founder and a Managing Director of The VIEW Group. An early and dedicated participant in the encouragement of free markets, democracy, and entrepreneurship in several emerging markets, his career has been an application of skills in entrepreneurship and investment management that have led to the creation of several valuable leading enterprises. A professional investor since 1987, Mr. Bhandari was with the Harvard Management Company prior to founding VIEW in 1992. Initially in the venture capital group, he was involved with private equity investments across a wide range of industries. He later managed two public markets funds for Harvard, a risk arbitrage fund and a traditional hedge fund. Prior to joining Harvard, Mr. Bhandari played a role in the management and growth of his family’s business and worked in mechanical design and software engineering roles at UTC-Carrier and C.S. Draper Laboratories. He holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and an S.B in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Promod Haque, Managing Partner, Norwest Venture Partners

Promod is a Managing Partner at Norwest Venture Partners, a leading high-tech venture capital fund. Prior to joining Norwest Venture Partners, he spent 18 years in various operational roles ranging from product development, marketing, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer at various public and private companies - Siemens International, Thorn EMI, Emergent Technologies and Dimensional Medicine, Inc. He received a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Delhi, India. Mr. Haque also holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Northwestern University and an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg Graduate School of Management, where he serves on the advisory board.

R.P. Singh, Chairman and Managing Director, Power Grid Corporation of India, Ltd

The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd is the central transmission utility of India, with one of the largest networks in the world. Incorporated in October 1989, it owns and operates over 40,000 circuit kms of power lines. With a turnover of Rs 2,860 crore in the last fiscal year, the company is one of the most efficient PSUs in the country. Chairman and managing director R.P. Singh has overseen its double digit growth since 1996.

Mohanbir Sawhney is the McCormick Tribune Professor of Electronic Commerce and Technology and the Director of the Center for Research in Technology, Innovation, and E-Commerce at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University.

Professor Sawhney is a globally recognized expert in Business-to-Business e- Commerce and e-Business strategy. He was recently named by Business Week as one of the 25 most influential people in e-Business. In November 1999, Crain’s Chicago Business named him a member of “40 under 40”, a select group of young business leaders in the Chicago area. He has also received several awards for teaching excellence; He was named the Outstanding Professor of the Year at Kellogg in 1998, and has been a finalist for this award in 1997 and 1996. He also received the Sidney Levy Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1999 and 1995.

K.N. Grant, Chief Executive, India Tobacco Division, ITC

Mr. K.N. Grant is the Chief Executive of the Tobacco Business of ITC Limited, a US $ 2 Billion diversified Indian Company. ITC has interests in several FMCG products, Paper & Paperboard, Agribusinesses, Hotels, Packaging, Garments, Retailing and I.T.

Mr. Grant is an Economics graduate and has an MBA degree, specializing in Marketing. After completing his MBA in 1979, he trained with a diversified Indian Company, The Delhi Cloth & General Mills Ltd (DCM) as a Management Trainee. He joined ITC in 1980 in the Marketing function of the Tobacco Division. During his tenure in the Tobacco Division, he has handled a wide range of responsibilities in Sales, Brand Management and Product Development, covering a range of Product Categories. Mr. Grant was Executive Vice President, Marketing of the Tobacco Division before assuming charge as the Divisional Chief Executive in 1999.

He has been involved in the incubation and development of all of ITC’s new initiatives in the consumer and FMCG sectors. He is a Director on the Board of King Maker Marketing Inc., USA, and an Alternate Director on the Board of Surya Nepal Private Limited. Mr. Grant is also a Member of the Executive Council of the Indian Society of Advertisers and the Audit Bureau of Circulation, and is Chairman of the Eastern India Services Committee of the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII).

Narendra Ambwani, Managing Director, Johnson & Johnson, India

Mr. Narendra Ambwani joined Johnson & Johnson India as a Product Manager in 1975, progressing through various positions in Sales and Marketing to become the Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Indonesia in 1990. He relocated to India in 1995 when he was appointed Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson India.

Mr. Ambwani holds a B. Tech. (Electrical) degree from I.I.T., Kanpur, and an MBA degree from I.I.M., Ahmedabad. Mr. Ambwani has initiated the ECR (Efficient Consumer Response) movement in India and is the Chairman since its inception in the year 2000. More than 30 leading FMCG companies are members of ECR India.

Ranjan Kapur, Executive Chairman, Ogilvy Mather, India

After completing his Masters in English from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, Mr. Kapur joined Citibank in 1964. Two years later, fed up with number crunching, he moved to S H Benson which was Ogilvy & Mather’s previous avatar. He has been with the agency ever since and has worked with them in India, New York and several Asian countries.

Since his return to India nine years ago, Ogilvy & Mather has climbed two rungs to claim the No. 2 position in the country. But most significantly it has acquired and retained its Creative leadership for six years running.

Mr. Kapur is a member of the Asia Pacific Regco and is also on Ogilvy and Mather’s Worldwide Board. In 2002 he was elevated to the position of Vice- Chairman, Ogilvy & Mather Asia Pacific.
