LAMBSONS HIRE COMPANY PROFILE

The doors to Lambson’s Hire were first opened in March 1980 when founder and owner Rohan Lambson took the plunge and set up shop in Orange Grove. Having seen the hire market in Australia through connections such as Coates Hire and Kennard’s Hire, he saw a need in the South African market and has continued to service that need for the past 34 years.

The company has 18 outlets spread throughout Gauteng, North West, Limpopo and Mpumalanga. In addition to these there are two separate specialist divisions namely Compact Plant and Concrete Surface Preparation.

Rohan remains very involved in the company although in 2012 he announced he would start to “let go” and proudly appointed Devin van Zyl as the CEO. Devin joined the company in March 1995 and was appointed as a Director in March 2008 and MD in August 2010. Devin is supported by Regional Managers Regan Hill and John Nicholls who with Area Managers oversee the network of branches, which emphasises the strong management structure of the company. Rohan’s extensive knowledge of the hire industry is of great value to the sustained growth of the business and he will continue to provide this expertise to his successor.

Non - Executive Director, Adele Lambson, hails from a Cum Laude teacher’s academic background and her “outside looking in” approach brings diversity to management strategy. As a Lambson, she fully shares the passion of the business with Rohan and the family values he brings to the company.

Brenda Ford, Director – Human Capital handles all the human elements of the company from payroll through to labour requirements, OHS, Pension and disability and directs the skills development and training processes. Brenda joined the company in 1999 and was appointed as a Director in August 2010.

Coenraad van den Berg joined the company in 1996 and in August 2012 became General Manager – Workshops and appointed as Plant Director in August 2014. Coenraad rose through the branch network and was an Area Manager for a number of years prior to his workshop appointment. He is ably assisted by Stores Manager Philemon Leaba and Workshop Manager Patrick Sithole along with the workshop section leaders. An expansive team of mechanics and service technicians ensure all hire equipment is maintained in-house which not only goes to keeping down rental costs, but also assures clients of equipment history. All equipment is fully compliant with the rules of the Health and Safety act.

March 2013 brought about the appointment of Sonette Fourie – Chief Financial Officer. Sonette brings to the company not only her accounting skills (B Compt and B Compt Hons) but the value of financial foresight which will benefit the forward planning and strategies of the company.

Dillon Truter is the Divisional Manager of the Compact Plant division and leads a crew of in-house mechanics and field service technicians who ensure the compact equipment operates and runs smoothly. The extensive compact fleet which comprises of ride-on rollers, dumpers, access platforms, mini wheel loaders, excavators, skid steers as well as lighting systems is controlled from their premises situated in Benrose. All on site servicing is carried out by Dillon and his technicians.

The specialist division of Concrete Surface Preparation with Divisional Manager Hannes Senekal at its helm officially opened in May 2014. CSP as it is referred to, offers specialized equipment for the use in grinding, surface preparation and polishing of concrete on a domestic, industrial and commercial scale. Equipment is also offered for cleaning, restoring, repairing and removing concrete. As with Compact the division operates from Benrose. Cornel Gouws is Customer Service Manager and supports the team of customer service staff that take care of all clients around the country. Lambson’s offers an account management system for clients whereby a central control is offered for a number of sites. Key Account Managers work closely with the Cornel to ensure the right clients are supported by this management system.

This alleviates the burden of owning and maintaining equipment whether the hirer is a DIY fanatic, bakkie builder or a large construction company. The basis of the plant and equipment available has always been on the principle that if it can be carried on a one- ton bakkie Lambson’s will stock it. This has further expanded to if it can be towed it will be stocked and now the product envelope has expanded to even bigger equipment transported on trucks.

The company has an integrated and well-networked rental programme and this enables clients to hire and return from any branch. This allows for movement of projects and does not restrict the hirer to using only the branch where the account was opened.

Lambson’s Hire has strong roots in the South African market and intends to continue being a reputable member of the economy. The needs and requirements of the industry will, as always, continue to be top priority and service excellence to clients remains the cornerstone of the company.
