Do You Think The School Year Should Be

Extended?

Would you be exhausted if the school year was extended? I would be because I would have to wake up really early, like 6:00am everyday in the summer. I believe the school year should not be extended.

Some people emphasize that the school year should be extended. In the article

“Time for a Longer School Year” from www.theweek.com, disadvantaged kids were nearly three grade levels behind their more advantaged peers. Pat Winger claims that

American students are not remembering what they have learned during the school year.

Summer has been too long, and American students are not remembering what they have learned. In the article “Cut the Summer Break: Study Backs Longer School Year”, Ben

Wolfgang explains that a longer school year is a useful tool for increasing student achievement, which is demonstrated by certain schools.

While these articles do make some valid points, I disagree with some of their arguments. Some American students are remembering what they have learned during the school year. Some American students are reading everyday. Many American students go to camp everyday. Some camps have staff members who teach subjects like math, science, ELA, and social studies.

Just as there are many supporters of a longer school year, many people are opposed to the idea. In the article “Time for a Longer School Year” from www.theweek.com, extending the school year is expensive, because for a longer school year, you have to pay the teachers and employees more. You also have to make sure the buildings are kept heated and cooled longer. I agree with this idea because if you have to keep paying for the school and staff, you might end up with no money and the school might close down. In the article “Cut the Summer Break: Study Backs Longer School

Year” by Ben Wolfgang, supporters don’t think every student in the world needs more time in school. I agree because even though I don’t go to camp in the summer, my mom gives me math, science, and reading books so when I have nothing to do I can study those subjects. Once I go to school in September, I don’t lose what I’ve learned during the school year.

I believe that the school year should not be extended. I believe that we shouldn’t have a longer school year because we won’t be able to have fun. Some people think school is boring. Every single day we have to do work and homework. Some people will get tired. We need a break. Teachers and students need to see their families and spend time with their families more because instead of doing work all the time, they can something else, like fun activities. We can’t spend all year in school. We need summers off so we can relax. Every single day people have to follow the school rules and some people even hate the rules. If we extend the school year then, one day, people might start dropping/cutting classes…just saying.

I think it’s fine with American students going to school for 180 days. If a student loses what they’ve learned during the school year, why not teach it to them again? I don’t think the school year should be extended.
