Temperance Elementary School Third Grade Mrs. Stinnett [email protected] 946-2811 February 3, 2017 Dear Parents, This week we have been working on math SOL 3.3The students will be naming and writing fractions including mixed numbers. They will be modeling fractions and writing the fractions’ names. We will be comparing fractions having like and unlike denominators using words and symbols (<,>, and =). Key vocabulary includes: part, fraction, partition, halves, thirds, fourths, eights, tenths, twelfths, numerator, denominator, like, unlike, greater than, less than, equal to, area model, set model, and number line model. During reading time, students continue to read biographies. Students are reading about either Rosa Parks, Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, or Cesar Chavez at this time. During our English block, students continue to learn about roots, prefixes, and suffixes. . Students have been learning about matter in Science. This is SOL 3.3. Students will learn to describe the physical properties of matter. Students are investigating three states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). We are learning about SOL 3.10 during our social studies block. Students will recognize the importance of government in the community, Virginia, and the United States. We will discuss the purpose of rules and laws, the basic purpose of government, and the importance of our government. Key vocabulary includes: community, rules, laws, government, and rights. Students completed papers on the three branches of the United States Government.

February 6th-10th- National School Counselor’s Week- Thank you Mrs. Eckenrode! February 7th- PTO meeting at 5:00 February 9th- Family Game Night 6:00-7:30 February 10th- Interims go home AND Pajama Day! February 14th- Valentine’s Day. Students will be exchanging Valentine’s! There are 15 students in the class and their first names are on the back of this letter for Valentines!! February 15th- Parent Teacher conferences and YMCA interest meeting at 6:30!! February 20th- Was a Teacher Planning Day but is now a regular school day due to inclement weather. Students will be in school! February 22nd- Mrs. Leeds’s (our music teacher) birthday! February 24th- Saint Jude Math-a-Thon money is due February 26th- Mrs. Diane Mays’s (our school nurse) birthday
