PLANNED COURSE CURRICULUM GUIDE
Wood I Grade 9-12
I. COURSE DESCRIPTION AND INTENT:
The Wood Technology I course provides an understanding of beginning woodworking with an emphasis on safety. Processes used and occupations provided by the woodworking industries are discussed in detail. Selected projects are completed to provide a successful transfer of knowledge. The program is designed to help students:
Become familiar with the various types of wood and their uses; Safely use equipment and hand held power tools; Acquire some of the skills used in woodworking careers; Recognize the beauty and quality of a well-constructed project.
II. INSTRUCTIONAL TIME:
Class Periods: 6 per 6-day cycle Length of Class Periods (minutes): 56 Length of Course: 1 semester Unit of Credit: .5 Updated: June, 2014 COURSE: Wood I GRADE(S): 9-12 STRAND: Technology and Engineering TIME FRAME: 1 semester
PA ACADEMIC STANDARDS 3.4.A The Scope of Technology 3.4.C Technology and Engineering Design 3.4.D Abilities for a Technological World 3.4.E The Designed World
ASSESSMENT ANCHORS 3.4.10.A1 Illustrate how the development of technologies is often driven by profit and an economic market.
3.4.12.A2.Describe how management is the process of planning, organizing, and controlling work.
3.4.10.C2. Analyze a prototype and/or create a working model to test a design concept by making actual observations and necessary adjustments
3.4.12.C3.Apply the concept that many technological problems require a multi- disciplinary approach.
3.4.10.D1. Refine a design by using prototypes and modeling to ensure quality, efficiency, and productivity of a final product.
3.4.10.D2. Diagnose a malfunctioning system and use tools, materials, and knowledge to repair it.
3.4.10.E7. Evaluate structure design as related to function, considering such factors as style, convenience, safety, and efficiency.
3.4.12.E7. Analyze the technologies of prefabrication and new structural materials and processes as they pertain to constructing the modern world.
RESOURCES Steel rulers Tape measures Measurement handout Measurement quiz Cabinet making textbook Sample bill of materials Sample plan of procedure Safety handouts Stationery and portable woodworking tools and equipment.
OBJECTIVES 3.4.12.E7 The learner will: Accurately measure specified lengths and widths in fractional inches. Identify the various types of wood and describe the processes used in the production of each. List and describe the common defects found in raw lumber. Provide solutions for each type of defect, which will allow the raw lumber to be used as finish material. Complete a bill of materials and a plan sheet for each project they will be building. Use protective and safety equipment properly.
3.4.10.D2 The learner will: Safely operate each stationary power tool. List and describe each machine control and its function. Identify each operation that can be safely performed on the machine. Describe hazardous operations or areas of operation associated with each machine. Safely assist fellow students using a specific machine.
3.4.12.A2 The learner will: Demonstrate cooperation and production with another person or group. Exhibit an increased level of confidence and knowledge of safe working practices. Recognize quality construction of wood related items and explain the process to produce such an item. Recognize and construct a quality wood project.
34.10.C2 The learner will: List in order the steps required to machine square a board. Explain and safely demonstrate the process of ripping and cross cutting. List the various types of sure form tools and their use. Explain the difference between cutting, scraping, and grinding operations. Demonstrate the correct operations and procedures for drilling and boring holes. List the types of wood joints and describe as well as demonstrate how they are cut. List and describe the various types of glues and adhesives. Recognize and identify the size of a nail, brad or screw using the American National System. Describe the difference in gluing edge and end grain joints. List the types of clamps and their primary use. Describe the types of stain and determine best use for a particular project. Demonstrate the application of clear finishes to various projects and types of wood.
ESSENTIAL CONTENT 3.4.12.E7
Have the student complete three (3) measurement quizzes with 100% accuracy before the student may move to the next area. Quizzes are matching a fractional number to its location on a ruler. Each student will view a video dealing with the production of construction lumber and then complete a review sheet. Using a cooperative learning activity, students will work through a sample bill of materials and plan sheet for a teacher designed project. The class will view the process of measuring, laying out cut lines, and sawing the pieces needed to assemble the project. Individuals will be tested on the proper use of safety equipment and the importance of its use.
3.4.10.D2 Viewing each individual stationary power tool, the students will participate in a teacher-centered discussion through note taking and questions. Have each student describe the purpose or function of a machine control. Discuss the processes that can be safely completed on each machine. Demonstrate the safe procedure for assisting someone using a machine. Students will be given a safety examination, which they must pass with an 85% or better average. 3.4.12.A2 The student will be placed in a cooperative situation in order to complete a required assignment. Students will work together to complete a bill of materials, a plan of procedure, and dimension a detailed drawing. Cut specific woodworking joints that require a high skill level and a demand for safety. View several videotapes dealing with alternative processes used to build and assemble quality cabinet or case works. Develop skills and gain an appreciation of quality work by completing an individual project using the processes learned
3.4.10.C2 List and demonstrate in order, the proper steps for machine squaring a board. Demonstrate the difference between ripping and cross cutting. Display and demonstrate the various types of sure form tools (a) files, (b) rasps. Demonstrate the difference between cutting and scraping operations. Explain and demonstrate the correct processes for drilling and boring operations. Cut each type of wood joint and compare the way each is cut. Have each student read "cabinet making" chapter on glues and adhesives. Discuss each type of glue and then complete a definition work sheet. Students will view the various sizes of nails and screws while copying notes concerning the size classifications. Students will test examples of edge and end grain glue joints to determine what makes one stronger than the other. Complete a worksheet, which explains the differences in wood stains. Students will test any stain on scrap wood before applying it to their project. Read and discuss the chapter concerning clear finishes, students will view examples of each finish.
