8th Grade Physical Science Course Syllabus

Goal: The middle school Physical Science course is designed to give all students an overview of common strands in Physical Science including, but not limited to the following: Matter, Energy, Sound, Light, Force, Motion, Gravity, Electricity, and Magnetism. This course will also prepare the students for the CRCT in science that will be aligned with the Georgia Performance Standards as well as courses that will be required at the high school level.

Content: Unit 1 Nature of Matter Unit 2 Energy Unit 3 Wave Nature of Sound & Electromagnetic Radiation Unit 4 Relationship of Force, Mass, and Motion Unit 5 Gravity, Electricity and Magnetism

Science Notebook: The students will keep all assignments for each unit of study in the science section of their binder. This notebook will be used as a study guide for each unit. Late Work Late work will be accepted up to five school days after the due date. Late work may be assessed up to a maximum penalty of 10 points.

Mastery

Students will be assigned a mandatory re-do/ZAP for all major assessments receiving a score of 73% or lower. A ZAP will also be given for required homework and class work as directed by the teacher. Students will complete as many re-dos as needed to achieve at least 74% mastery. All assessments must be retaken within five school days of their graded return to the student. All ZAP assignments must be completed within five school days of the ZAP. All special education students have five days to complete their ZAP assignments as well, after the students’ caseworkers have been notified. All ZAP assignments that are not completed will receive a grade of zero.

Three ZAP assignments per class are allowed each nine weeks. After a student has had three ZAP assignments in a class in a nine weeks, a parent conference must be held before any further ZAP assignments will be given in that class.

Lab Safety: The students must follow all lab directions and safety procedures. Failure to do so will result in removal from the lab activity.
