Principal’s Report
Amy Kohlmeier (Principal): Amy began by saying that there is lots of activity right now at Boise High. First, she mentioned two recent awards that have been received by Boise High students.
The Siemens Award was given to two Idaho Students, both of Boise High: Nick Davey and Hyonjee Joo for AP Excellence in Math and Science. The Horatio Alger Scholarship and Award was awarded to Seth Whiteyes for $20,000.
Amy went on to report that Boise High is offering its first on-line course this fall. Sociology will be offered on-line as a blended course designed by Sandy Waters and Heidi Pluska. There was a recent change to the new law allowing the teacher to be in the building where students are taking the on-line courses. In the fall, tech reading and writing will be offered in the 9th grade and health will be offered in the 11th grade – both are on-line blended courses. Liz requested that updates of changes coming from the pending legislation be forwarded to her for distribution to the board and to post in the Brave Weekly to keep all of us up to date with changes coming so quickly. Amy will forward legislative updates she receives to help get the information out to parents faster. 3
Amy announced that Boise High will be participating in two pilot programs next year in English and Mathematics. The curriculum for these new pilots will be based on “common core standards.” These new courses will look a lot more like AP course type curriculum with more writing and reading with new EOC’s. In addition, in 2014 the ISAT’s will go away and new “common core standards” testing will be used instead. New curriculum will begin this fall in all courses, not including AP courses.
Senator Crapo is coming to speak to Social Studies classes on February 23th at 1:30 on the topic “The Economy.”
Faculty Report
Stephanie Keeney (Faculty Liaison): Stephanie reported that Character Ed is holding a meeting on Thursday. Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches will be served and then lunch money will be donated to Braves Helping Braves to support its various programs. Stephanie went on to say that Talent Show auditions are Feb. 21 and 22nd, after-school. The Talent Show will be held the Thursday evening and Friday before Spring Break on March 22/23rd. AAA nominations were selected for this year. Teachers nominate students for Athletics, Activities and Academics and Character Ed. Stephanie passed out the list of nominees who will receive a t-shirt, recognition in the Brave Weekly, and a photo of nominated students is hung in the hall.
Committee Reports
Skylar Means (Student Representative): Skylar reported that the Leadership Class is working on its fundraisers. The Sweetheart Dance is coming up from 8 – 11pm in the big gym and is a Sadie Hawkins format. The Prom planning is moving forward. The Leadership Retreat is coming up. For the retreat, the Leadership students will miss a day of school and go out into the community to learn leadership skills from local companies.
Holly Spiering (Volunteer Coordinator): Liz reported that Holly is looking for more volunteers for the Sweetheart dance for Saturday night. Please contact Holly if you are available to chaperone. Holly has a new email and phone number, Liz will be emailing out Holly’s new contact information.
Carol Hembree (Vice President): Carol explained that all the paperwork for the grants have been filed. The Grants totaled $16,000, which was $1,000 over our budgeted amount. The board did receive a very nice thank you note from Tracy Leinen, Athletic Director, for the scoreboard, which was the item we all decided to fund with the unbudgeted money. Carol read Tracy’s note to the board. Dee Koeger (Fundraising/Levy): Dee was excited that she is now receiving lots of emails for donations as a result of the email that went out requesting donations. Dee requested help posting information on Facebook and Anne Cirillo kindly offered to help with this effort. 4
Liz asked Amy if she knew of any large items needed by the school that the Brave Boosters could focus on as an item to fund with proceeds from the on-line auction. March 1 is the deadline for all auction items. Amy will get back to Liz this week with ideas. Historically, large items to fund have been technology. Molly Mannschreck requested that Dee send her a list of a few items already donated for Molly to include in the Brave Weekly to get exposure for the auction and possibly to generate additional items.
Dee reported that the Levy Campaign is going well. They are working on getting registration information out and also speaking at 9th grade registration night. Dee is still looking for volunteers to help with the Levy. Liz received an email from Sue Lovelace on how to volunteer. Amy encouraged the board to vote early absentee.
Shannon Yochum (Membership): Shannon reported to the board that she is working on a new membership volunteer form. She is also going to provide an on-line option. Shannon would like any input for edits/updates to the current form to be emailed to her.
Anne Cirillo (Alumni Liasion): Anne announced that the Boise Brave Facebook page is up and has 59 likes so far. Anne asked for the board to Like and Share the page with friends and the BHS community. Anne asked for any updates for posting be forwarded to Anne via facebook message or email.
New Business
Liz O’Gara (President): Liz informed the board that Nancy Barrera has submitted her letter of resignation to the board and will no longer be updating our website. Liz expressed her thanks for Nancy’s time volunteering.
Jennifer Jones (Communications/PR): Jennifer has developed a communication plan for the Brave Boosters with input from Liz and Carol. Jennifer is open to any comments or input for changes to the proposed plan. Jennifer suggested that we use the free press for P.R. more than we do for items like Grants, the Levy or our upcoming on-line Auction. Jennifer made some excellent suggestions in her report and feels that many of these items we can get going right away.
With Nancy’s resignation, a new website is necessary. Liz would like a new committee of maybe 2 people to focus efforts on a new dynamic website. Liz found Valice (Katie Moonie and Jenna – both BHS graduates-formerly The Whitespace) who will use wordpress to design a new website. They are offering free add-ons and a three week turnaround. They can do logo work if we want that as well. A discussion followed regarding the Brave Booster name/logo and it was generally decided that a new name might be a good idea to help identify what we do. Stephanie Keeney had a P.R. idea and suggested putting a 4 x 6 card on each door at Back to School Night listing items in each classroom that were donated by Brave Parents.
Liz requested $1,150 to get a new website started with Valice. 5
In order to keep the new website updated the proposed Communication Chair and the Executive Board will have access to update website. Committee chairs will have access to the site to update as well.
Action: Cyndi Eloyfson moved that the Board spend $1,150 with Valice on a new website. Anne Cirillo seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
Meeting adjourned at 4:45pm.
Respectfully submitted by Gail Inch, Secretary
