INSTRUCTIONS FOR OBTAINING PRE-APPROVAL FOR COURSES TAKEN ON A CLARK-AFFILIATED STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM
1. Select the courses you plan to take during your period of study abroad. It is strongly recommended to select more courses than you are required to take. Courses are not guaranteed, so it is wise to have a couple of extra courses pre-approved.
2. a) Fill in your course selections. Remember that you cannot receive credit for a beginning language unless you take an intensive course of at least 35-40 contact hours. The Language Perspective requires at least 75 contact hours.
b) Provide course descriptions to the Faculty Advisor or Chairperson of your major department if you want to take a course for major credit. Ask your advisor to initial the Major Waiver Approval column.
c) If you wish courses to be evaluated for a Program of Liberal Studies requirement, write the requirement for which you want the course considered (i.e. HP, SP, etc.), in the column marked PLS Waiver Approval. You must request PLS approval from Dean Kevin McKenna, Senior Associate Dean of the College and Director of Academic Advising. Please include a course description with your evaluation request.
d) Indicate “LG” for letter grade. Letter grade(s) will appear on your Clark transcript and will be figured into your grade point average.
Courses overseas must be taken for a letter grade. Internship programs receive “CR/NC” for the internship course. The only grades awarded in the "CR/NC" situation are CR (credit) for work at a satisfactory level (C- or better) and NC (no credit) for work at an unsatisfactory level (D or less). A grade of NC is noted on your transcript and is computed as a zero into your GPA.
3. Have the form signed by your faculty advisor(s), indicating their approval of all courses selected.
Return this form to the Study Abroad Office with your application. If you add or drop courses, once you begin your program, immediately email your major faculty advisor at Clark and the Study Abroad Office.
Save your academic-related correspondence and work performed overseas. This is important in case there are questions on grading or academic integrity.
