Introduction

Go Green Vacations Company has just purchased 400 hectares of land in Northern Ontario to construct a new vacation resort and an 18-hole golf course. Go Green Vacations would like to construct and run their new resort and golf course in an environmentally responsible way, so they have hired Fix Our Planet Consultants to assist in the design and planning of the resort facilities and operating procedures. As an employee of Fix Our Planet Consultants, you have been assigned the task of developing a Sustainable Development Report to present to the Go Green Vacations Company.

At a meeting, the Go Green Vacations Company presented the following ideas for the resort.

Facilities:

 Room for 100 guests in one hotel building or multiple smaller cottages.  Two restaurants: One casual featuring burgers, pizzas, sandwiches and similar foods, and one gourmet featuring seafood, steaks, farmed game meat, and local produce.  Indoor swimming pool.  Each room will have a wood-burning fireplace.

Recreation - The resort must include:

 An 18-hole golf course.  Four tennis courts.  Docks for boats and personal watercraft.  The building of trails for off-road vehicles, hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.  To increase fishing opportunities, Go Green Vacations would like to stock the lake with brown trout.  Also since it is currently illegal to use live bait, such as minnows, and crayfish, in the lake, the Go Green Vacation Company would like to try and get approval to allow their guests to bring and fish with live bait.  They would also like to introduce ring-necked pheasants into the grassland area for additional fall hunting opportunities.

Your Task:

Part A – Resort Plan

1. Examine the “Go Green Vacation Property” map and read the “Background Information” handout.

2. All of the facilities listed above must be present in your design of the resort. Using the “Symbol” handout provided to you, cut out the different symbols and begin to plan the layout of the resort. Keep in mind the changes that will occur to the property as the resort is being built. Go Green Vacations Company is striving to be eco-friendly and minimize their impact on the environment. Once you are happy with the layout of your resort, neatly glue the symbols in place.

3. Draw in lines for major roads and trails.

4. Add in any other symbols you would like to have in the resort (i.e. buildings). Be sure to label each one.

Part B - Ecology 1. Draw a small food web for the deciduous forest area based on the description provided. Make sure your food web has at least 7 organisms in it. Don’t forget to draw in the arrows!!

2. Which organisms can make their own food in this area?

3. Which organism(s) would have the most toxins inside of their body? What is this process called?

4. If all of the herbivores were eliminated from the food web;

a) What would happen to the number of producers? Explain why.

b) What would happen to the number of carnivores? Explain why.

5. Explain how the soil is kept rich and full of nutrients.

6. Introducing ring-necked pheasants into the Grassland area could provide other hunting possibilities. Introducing plants or animals into a new area (either on purpose or by accident) are known as ______species. Based on the readings, another organism that falls into this category is the ______. 7. Describe 2 possible problems that could occur to the grassland area by adding ring-necked pheasants.

Part C – Impacts on the Environment

The construction of any building or facility impacts the natural environment in a variety of ways. Complete the chart below by listing various impacts that the construction and running of the resort will have on the environment in the four different categories.

Impact on During Construction Operating the Resort

Land

Water

Air

Plant & Animal Life

Part D – Resort Facilities and Infrastructure

The resource property currently has no electrical power lines on it, so the resort owners will have to pay thousands of dollars to have power lines run through the middle of the deciduous forest or generate their own power.

The resort also needs its own water supply and waste management plan. Remember to take into consideration the impacts on the environment you filled out in your chart as you complete the tasks below.

Where is electricity needed in my resort?

List 10 areas where electricity is needed in the resort.

1. ______2. ______3. ______4. ______5. ______6. ______7. ______8. ______9. ______10.______

Possible Ways of Heating Water

1. ______2. ______3. ______

Part D continued - Renewable Energy Sources

1. What does renewable mean?

2. Research one renewable energy source that you would consider appropriate for the resort. Things to consider: Is it reliable all the time? Is it expensive? Is it important to have a backup system? Topics to Discuss:

All research must be rewritten in your own words (copying and pasting information is plagiarism and you will be given an incomplete for this section). a) The renewable energy source I have chosen is: ______b) Get approval from your teacher: Teacher Signature ______c) I found the information from these websites (write down exact website addresses):

d) In a paragraph, describe how electricity is generated in the renewable energy source you have chosen. e) Include 2 pictures of your renewable energy source. Include a one sentence description for each picture and then copy and paste the website address you found the picture from. f) One company that sells the equipment used to make electricity is: ______g) How much does it cost to buy? h) How much does it cost to operate or maintain?

i) List 2 advantages of using this type of renewable energy.

j) List 2 disadvantages of using this type of renewable energy.

Part D continued - Making the Resort More Eco-friendly

Make recommendations on building practices (construction), and energy efficiency products, and technologies to incorporate into the resort during construction. Describe 5 recommendations you would make so the resort is more eco-friendly and explain their benefit to energy efficiency.

Recommendation Benefit to Energy Savings 1) 2)

3)

Part D continued - Water Supply Plan a) List 5 areas where water will be needed daily:

1. ______2. ______3. ______4. ______5. ______b) Where do you plan to get the water that is needed? ______c) On your map, draw or number where you would get your water from. d) Water that goes down the drain needs to go somewhere. Since this resort is in Northern Ontario, sewers are not available. If water is released into the ground, where will it flow back to?

e) How can sewage be contained so it doesn’t cause pollution?

f) On your map, draw or number where you would put your septic system. g) Describe 2 problems that you would observe in the lake if sewage began to leak into it.

3) Part E – Natural Resource Management

The Go Green Vacations Company should take steps to manage their natural resources their property has to offer. Managing their resources will help save money and be more environmentally friendly. Take into consideration the impacts on the environment you filled out in Part C.

1) Restaurants - The restaurant could order all of its food from a supplier but it is expensive and it creates pollution. Therefore, the resort could make its own food to use in the restaurants. List 3 areas or ways the restaurant could make or get its own food for its menu.

a) ______b) ______c) ______

2. What would be the most suitable source of wood for the wood burning fireplaces in the rooms? Explain why you made this choice.

11. Describe 3 ways the Go Green Vacations Company could protect threatened species and sensitive habitats on the property. Part F - Safety and Human Health

All workplaces have health and safety risks. For this part of the assignment you are to choose an occupation that interests you that would either be involved during the construction of the resort, such as an electrician, or construction worker, or be employed at the resort, such as a chef, or grounds keeper.

Once you have selected an occupation you are to research it and create a “Career Connect Facts Sheet” that includes the information outlined below.

1. Job title

2. Required education and training

3. General job description and on the job duties

4. Working conditions (inside, outside, inside a vehicle, sitting, standing…)

5. Potential income
