Objectives: 1. Shown 10 pieces of landscape power equipment, I can identify the equipment and explain its use in the landscape.

2. Provided with case studies, I can list the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that should be used in that situation and other protective practices.

3. Given a copy of a landscape power equipment operator’s manual, I can demonstrate how to use the manual in preparing to safely using and maintaining landscape power equipment.

4. Given any landscape power equipment, I can identify the location of the controls and demonstrate their use.

5. Under the supervision of a teacher or parent, I can demonstrate the safe use of an approved piece of landscape power equipment.

Landscape Safety Homework Part 1 Inventory Equipment: Identify all of the landscape safety equipment that your family owns (or friend/neighbor) and list them below.

Case Study 1:

Kyler has been recently hired to work for the BLM on the Interagency Fire Crew. After completing his initial training and passed his safety exams. His supervisor has asked him to go clear a trail of trees that have fallen over the winter using a chain saw.

As part of Pilar’s SAE, she has decided to raise a garden. Before she can plant she needs to prepare the soil. She adds different soil amendments on top of the family’s old garden spot. She has received permission from her parents to use a rototiller to prep the soil.

Campbell has been outside playing with his new Husky puppy. His dad comes outside to mow the lawn and asked Campbell to use the string trimmer along the edges while he mows.

Sunset View Golf course just finished hiring their summer interns. Paxton a member of the local FFA chapter was one of the individuals hired. After a couple of weeks his supervisor has given him the responsibility to use the power reel mower on all of the greens.

Kinley has been left home to babysit her little brother until her parents get home at 6:00. She wants to go to the movies that night with her friends but knows she won’t be able to until she get the lawn mowed. She decides to let her little brother ride with her on the riding lawn mower and she gives him her iPod to watch a movie while she is mowing.

The page should include but not limited to the following items. (Most of the document should be bulleted in its format and be easy to read.)  Your Name  Name of the equipment  Picture of the equipment  Dos and Don’ts of using the equipment.  Pre-use inspection.  Site preparation  PPE needed for it operation.  A picture of an injury from an accident related to this equipment. String Trimmer

Do Start the unit on firm ground or other solid surfaces in an open area. Keep the cutter tool covered with the carrying guard. Adjust harness and hand grip to suit work positions. Stop the engine before putting cutter down. Shut off engine before cleaning out clogged or stuck cutter.

Do not Leave tool running unattended. Overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times. Repair damaged attachments. Throw them out.

Pre-use Inspection Check the oil level. Ensure there is adequate fuel. Inspect the guards and string.

Site Preparation Check area for stones, glass, metal and debris. Keep people and pets away from starting and operating areas.

PPE Needed for Operation Wear pants and closed toed shoes. Wear safety glasses and hearing protection.
