Highlights from the 2002 Central West Coast (SF Bay) Cheoy Lee Rendezvous and Chinese Fire Drill Race
We had two events in 2002 for Cheoy Lee owners and enthusiasts: the “Chinese Fire Drill Race” in April 2002, and the Third Annual Rendezvous in September 2002. The following is a brief summary of the fun.
Chinese Fire Drill Race Bob Wilson and Clara Munley and the Sausalito Yacht Club hosted this event on April 27, 2002. The Race originally began in the early 1980’s, but was discontinued after three years, and the beautiful trophy of entwined dragons and the engraved names of past winners sat unnoticed in the club’s trophy case. Bob inquired about the event and was inspired to revive it. The Sausalito Yacht Club graciously offered to host the race again, immediately following the start of their Twin Island Race. The race covered a 10- mile course and required rounding both Alcatraz Island and Angel Island, with a finish in front of the yacht club.
We had 8 participating boats, most of whom had no past racing experience, so had a number of snafus like the last boat crossing the start line 20 minutes late, one boat ripping the entire cross-seam out of its main and sailing in under jib alone, and another boat trailing her dinghy the entire race. (The dinghy came in first in its class!). We had great sailing conditions, and all boats finished despite initial confusion about the course and racing tactics.
Results (corrected) were as follows: Charles Fairchilds Beamish Luders 36 sloop Jack Starkey Volare Offshore 27 Bob Wilson Bolero Luders 36 clipper Brent Hansen Dream Quest Luders 36 clipper John Mehan LaEmbra Offshore 40 Chip Asbury Olive Frisco Flyer 25 Dan Potash Left of Center Bermuda 30 Daniel Cressman Sandpiper Clipper 32

Third Annual Cheoy Lee Rendezvous This event was hosted by Brent Hansen and Sue Fritzke, and was again held at Ayala Cove on Angel Island. The rendezvous gathered 7 boats together, and we concentrated at the day-slips provided by the State Park. Participants included: Brent Hansen & Sue Fritzke Dream Quest Luders 36 clipper Jack Starkey Volare Offshore 27 Chip Asbury Olive Frisco Flyer 25 Dan Potash Left of Center Bermuda 30 (in spirit) Ken and Sue Kelton Rubicon Bermuda 30 Paul Langley & Richard Dingman King Richard Perry 48 Arvid Hoppas Nana Gray Pedrick 41
We again enjoyed a fine repast of barbequed items, potluck dishes, and chocolate cake before having to leave the island to the deer and raccoons (it is closed to the public at sunset).
