“Fall Prevention and Protection Programs”

Did you consider falling today? Most people don’t and suffer the consequences… and for some, will never be able to talk about it. Most, if not all of us, can relate to the consequences that would occur when we fall. From slip and trip to freefall to the rescue, Michael Ziskin, President, Field Safety Corp. will discuss these realities and review compliance requirements, best management practices and common sense approaches to manage fall hazards. The presentation will relate to both general industry as well as construction industry and is derived from Michael’s direct experience performing fall prevention and protection studies, designing fall protective systems, delivering training and developing programs for many client projects his company has completed. He will also relate to his direct experiences including some of the most dangerous situations… climbing smoke stacks and communication towers. In addition, Gregg Gatcomb, Regional Sales Manager, MSA will bring and display a variety of fall protective equipment, provide handout materials and be available to answer any additional questions you may have.

Michael Ziskin is founder and president of Field Safety Corporation (FSC) with over 39 years of experience in safety and health. He also held positions as corporate health and safety director for an international engineering and construction firm and project manager for a national air pollution engineering company that required many hours of work at heights. Michael serves on a number of national standard-making organizations and professional organizations involved with occupational health and safety issues and personal protection. He continues to hold an adjunct faculty member position at the University of New Haven and at Keene State College teaching courses on Health, Safety, Hazardous Materials Management and Emergency Response topics. Michael is a Lead Instructor for OSHA Region 1 Training Institute Education Center - New England at Keene State College, and an Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer for General Industry, Construction Industry, Maritime Industry, and Disaster Site Worker Programs. Michael is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM) and Certified Business Continuity Professional (CBCP), and a Fellow of the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.

 New Business/News

o The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration had announced a national safety stand-down from June 2 to 6 to raise awareness among employers and workers about the hazards of falls, which account for the highest number of deaths in the construction industry.

During the stand-down, employers and workers were asked to pause their workday to talk about fall prevention in construction, and discuss topics like ladder safety, scaffolding safety and roofing work safety. OSHA has also launched an official national safety stand-down website with information on how to conduct a successful stand-down.

The stand-down is part of OSHA's ongoing Fall Prevention Campaign, which was started in 2012 and was developed in partnership with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and NIOSH's National Occupational Research Agenda program. The campaign provides employers with lifesaving information and educational materials on how to plan ahead to prevent falls, provide the right equipment for their workers and train all employees in the proper use of that equipment.

To learn how to partner with OSHA in this stand-down, visit http://www.osha.gov/StopFallsStandDown/. The page provides details on how to conduct a stand-down; receive a certificate of participation; and access free education and training resources, fact sheets and other outreach materials in English and Spanish. To learn more about preventing falls in construction visit http://www.osha.gov/stopfalls/.

Employers can provide feedback about their Stand-Down and receive a Certificate of Participation signed by the Secretary of Labor, Thomas E. Perez. The page will remain active through July 15, 2014.
