Hudson Laboratory Certified for Bacteriology

Warwick, RI (March, 2007) – R.I. Analytical Laboratories (RIAL) announced today that its Hudson

Massachusetts laboratory has achieved full certification status for bacteriology analyses.

“A growing number of clients served by our Massachusetts operation have a need for bacteriological analyses. The ability to analyze those samples right here in Hudson improves our service while adding a new level of client convenience,” beamed Jessica Howlett, Bacteriology Supervisor. ”We built a separate laboratory within our client services center in order to improve our response with regard to the time-sensitive nature of bacteriological analyses. Although the process of constructing our new bacteriology facility and obtaining full certification has kept me very busy over the last seven months, we felt that such an investment of time and resources was necessary in order to satisfy the commitments we had made to our clients needing these services.”

The Hudson facility has been officially assigned laboratory ID Number M-MA1117 by the

Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and is already analyzing water samples for a complete schedule of bacteriological parameters including:

• Total Coliform – enzyme substrate presence/absence method SM9223

• Total Coliform – membrane filter method SM9222B

• Fecal Coliform – multiple tube fermentation method SM9221E

• E.Coli (Escherichia Coli) – enzyme substrate presence/absence method SM9223

• Heterotrophic Plate Count – pour plate method SM9215B

“Samples to be analyzed for bacteria are naturally time-sensitive,” continued Howlett. “From the minute bacteria samples are collected, organisms may reproduce, thereby increasing their numbers, or begin to die off, thus reducing their overall population. Because of these natural occurrences, the time allowed to process bacteria samples is regulated and must be closely monitored. Our ability to analyze those samples locally in Hudson will allow our clients to readily meet the time constraints imposed when monitoring for bacteriological contamination.”
