Prerequisites: Singing in some form whether solo or with an ensemble.(i.e, Singing at church, elementary, or middle school.)

Course Description: Vocal I is the entry-level class for both male and female students interested in vocal music performance. It is also an outlet for the student who enjoys singing for his/her own pleasure. The following musical skills for ensemble singing will be stressed: proper breathing, pleasant vocal production, blend and balance, expansion of range, good intonation, ear training, and sight-reading. Course Objectives: To improve and further develop individual and choral singing, including but not Limited to: pitch, intonation, scales, vocal blend, tone quality, diction, music literacy, sight singing and musicality. Required Materials: Each student is required to have a black 1” binder and pencil for class. The teacher will provide printed music scores for each student. Attendance Policy: ATTENDANCE AT ALLPERFORMANCES IS MANDATORY! Absences from performances will not be accepted unless under extreme circumstances. Students and parents are responsible for securing transportation to and from concerts or rehearsals held in the evening. Make-Up Policy: Make-ups for mandatory performances are handled on a individual basis. Policies & Procedures Dress Code: Concert attire must be purchased through the choral office to attain uniformity; no substitute attire may be worn. Ladies are to wear the director approved dress, shoes, and jewelry. Any lady not wearing the appropriate dress, shoes and/or jewelry will not perform and will receive a zero (0) for the performance. Gentlemen will wear the director approved FULL tuxedo with appropriate tie and shoes. Any gentleman not wearing all essential parts of the uniform will not perform and will receive a zero (0) for the performance. No men may wear earrings during a performance.

Call Time: Call time is one (1) hour prior to performance start time. Please be aware that students are required to sign in and check out at concerts. If students fail to arrive and sign in on time their grade will be adjusted.

Classroom/ Rehearsal Rules: The following are general rules that all students are expected to follow: 1. Enter classroom quietly. Take your seat without disturbing others in the room or other classrooms. 2. Be prepared for class. Bring folder and pencils to class. Teachers will not allow students to leave their classroom to get assignments or other required items that students failed to bring to class. 3. Do not disturb, hit, poke, or bother others in any way. DO NOT DISRUPT the class by talking or getting out of your seat, unless instructed to do so. RESPECT THE RIGHTS and VIEWS of others. 4. DO NOT groom in class by COMBING, BRUSHING HAIR, POLISHING NAILS, OR APPLYING COSMETICS. THIS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED. 5. SAFETY-Think and act safely at all times-NEVER throw anything at anytime and always follow the DIRECTIONS OF THE TEACHER. 6. RESPECT others and Park Crossing facilities at all times.

Grading Policy: Major Grades (Concerts & Performance Assessments/Written Test) 60%

EXPECTATION: This class is a PERFORMING ensemble. Your individual performance is an integral part of the whole. Students will also be assessed individually and in groups for major grades.  Minor Grades (Daily Rehearsal/Sight-Singing/Written Classwork) 35% EXPECTATION: Students are expected to come to class well prepared and ready to work.  Performance Review 10% PARK CROSSING HIGH SCHOOL CHORAL DEPARTMENT COMMITMENT AGREEMENT 2015 - 2016 I will make an honest effort to improve my general music knowledge, singing ability and contribution to the choir so that performances of the choir might be of the highest musical caliber possible. Attendance at all performances and rehearsals is mandatory. I agree to be present at all rehearsals and performances. I will notify Mr. Stovall of conflicts in advance of a performance. Excuses from performances must be pre-arranged, and approved by the director, unless an emergency makes this impossible. I must follow the concert dress code, for performances, as specified in the syllabus. I understand that choir is a participation, performance-based class. My attitude/effort and participation in daily rehearsals will determine eligibility for co-curricular events as well as my overall grade.
