Student-Led Instruction Project 100 Project Points
Directions: In a small group, you will teach the terms and concepts related to several objectives from this unit. You will have the entire class period for your lesson and are expected to use a minimum of 40 minutes – this includes the supplemental activity.
Your lesson must contain the following:
1. A PowerPoint SlideShow (20pts.) – must include a minimum of 16 slides; the first slide must contain your objective(s) for the lesson (what will your students learn?) and the remaining 15 should provide explanation and elaboration of key terms, concepts, ideas, and people concerning your objectives. The slides should translate the technical language from the textbook into easy to understand language (your own words!). Words and explanations on the slides should be supplemented with visuals (pictures/graphs, etc.) that help demonstrate or reinforce the information.
2. Effective and Knowledgeable Instruction (30pts.) – all group members should demonstrate accurate and thorough understanding of the objectives and their coinciding terms and concepts. You are the EXPERT! As you are covering the information, you should not merely read from your PowerPoint; instead, use it as a vehicle to elaborate and go into more detail. Provide additional anecdotes and examples not given in the text – this is how you demonstrate your knowledge, understanding, and expertise of the subject matter.
3. Supplemental Activity (25pts.) – for one of the concepts that you teach, you must create an activity that provides an in-depth practice of the key concept/term. This should not be skeleton notes or questions about the concept but rather an application of it. You must think of it as a way to further develop your students’ understanding of the material; when we use or apply a concept or skill, we are more likely to understand it in a real-world sense and in turn remember it. Your group needs to create a handout for the activity; make sure you include directions. You will provide me with a copy of the handout as well as an answer key. The activity should not be homework, so you must make sure you allow adequate time for this to be completed and discussed in class. Yes, discussed – make sure your students understand it and learn what you wanted them to learn. You are responsible for providing copies of the handout to your students if necessary.
*ALL group members must take an active and equal role during the lesson. You may divide up the responsibilities, but each member must “teach” for about the same amount of time.
Individual Responsibility (25pts.): You have six full class periods to work as a group (11.29-12.6). As an individual, you are responsible for keeping a detailed daily log that documents your responsibilities and accomplishments for that day’s work – what did you do? – be specific. Your log needs a minimum of six entries. I will use your log and my observations to determine your individual contribution points. If you do not turn in a log, then you will fail this section as the log will be awarded 15 of the 25 points; the remaining 10 will be based on your contribution to the teaching of the lesson. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to communicate with your group members so that you know what needs to be done. The time and work you missed in class would then need to be made up on your own time – with a corresponding log entry.
All work related to teaching your terms and concepts is due at the beginning of class Wednesday, December 7th. This includes an electronic copy of your PowerPoint SlideShow, a copy of your supplemental activity + answer key, and daily log.
Teaching will commence on Thursday, December 8th. Terms and concepts will be taught in order. It is imperative that you are present for your teaching day because if you are not, I will be unable to assess your effective and knowledgeable instruction.
