A. COURSE DESCRIPTION Family and Consumer Sciences is designed to provide students with basic information and skills needed to function effectively within the family and within a changing, complex society. Emphasis is given to the development of competencies related to: health and safety procedures related to child care; family and individual health; nutrition and food selection; meal planning, preparation, and service; and career skills. Upon completion of this course, the student should have developed basic life skills that promote a positive influence on the quality of life. Student leadership through Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), is an integral part of this course.

B. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION This class will include unit tests, hands-on activities, labs, lectures, and class participation.

C. COURSE OBJECTIVES 1. Providing Child Care 2. Caring for Clothing 3. Understanding Basic Sewing Techniques 4. Selecting Clothing, Developing Consumer Awareness, 5. Making Consumer Decisions 6. Practicing Safety and Sanitation 7. Personal Eating Habits 8. Nutrition 9. Using Kitchen Equipment 10. Using a Recipe 11. Planning and Serving Meals 12. Bread, Cereal, Rice, and Pasta 13. Milk, Yogurt, and Cheese 14. Cooking with Eggs 15. Color Logic 16. Creating Your Space 17. Personal Development Relationships 18. Understanding Personal Development

D. GRADING PLAN 1. Grades will be weighted: a. Class Participation, 15% b. Quizzes, 15% c. Assignments, 20% d. Tests/Final, 20% e. Labs/Competencies, 30% 2. Daily grades will be graded on participation and effort as well as correctness.

E. CLASSROOM RULES OF CONDUCT 1. RESPECT – for me, for you and for the classroom equipment. 2. ARRIVE IN CLASS ON TIME WITH ALL NEEDED SUPPLIES. 3. NAME, DATE AND CLASS PERIOD ON ALL PAPERS. (I will deduct points for this information NOT being on the papers.) 4. NO LEANING BACK IN CHAIRS. 5. PAPERS TURNED IN ON TIME. IF NOT, 10 POINTS WILL BE DEDUCTED FOR EVERY DAY IT IS LATE. Missed tests will be made up within 2 weeks or a zero will be given. SAFETY – When in the kitchen areas or working with the sewing machines, clothing with chains or other loose hanging objects will not be permitted.

100% on Safety Tests prior to labs will be required. MISCELLANEOUS (AS NEEDED OR DESIRED)
